On Sunday, reports in Brazil and England suggested the Newcastle captain was on the brink of an £80million move to Arsenal, with a medical pencilled in for Monday. It sounded advanced, decisive, almost done.
By Monday morning, the picture had shifted. Sky Sports reported that Guimaraes was actually flying to La Manga to link up with Newcastle’s pre-season camp, not to seal a Premier League power shift.
The saga has taken on a strange split-screen feel. On one side, there is Guimaraes’ long-declared wish. According to The Chronicle, the Brazil international informed Newcastle back in July that he wanted to join Arsenal, a message delivered clearly enough for the club to start exploring replacements and sketching out a future without him.
On the other side, there is the reality of this week. Guimaraes boarded a commercial flight from Brazil to Spain on Sunday night, a trip agreed with Newcastle, and is now expected to report for training and sit down face-to-face with new head coach Matthias Jaissle.
Jaissle is already with the squad in La Manga, working on the training pitches while his own appointment remains oddly half-formed. The German is in place, hands-on with the players, but his official confirmation as Eddie Howe’s successor is still delayed by paperwork. It means one of his first major acts as Newcastle manager may be conducted without the fanfare of a formal unveiling: convincing his most influential player either to stay and lead the project or to depart on the club’s terms.
Newcastle have not been caught cold by this. They have been braced for Guimaraes’ possible exit for weeks, drawing up lists and running the numbers. Among those linked as potential heirs to the midfield, Inter Milan and Croatia’s Petar Sucic has emerged as a prominent name, a sign of how central Guimaraes is to the way Newcastle play and the scale of the hole he would leave.

His situation runs in parallel with that of another Brazil star at the heart of Arsenal’s summer plotting. Vinicius Jr is also returning to training on Monday, his future under just as intense a spotlight, even if the dynamics are different.
Arsenal are preparing an audacious move for the Real Madrid forward, who has entered the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu. The stand-off over an extension has encouraged the Gunners, who see Vinicius as a transformative signing as they defend their Premier League crown.
Any sense that Madrid might blink, though, met a firm response from Jose Mourinho. Speaking after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Fiorentina in Austria, the Real manager made it clear Vinicius would report back as planned, alongside Brahim Diaz and new arrival Bernardo Silva. Their own summer, by contrast, has been relatively restrained. Two signings so far: Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34million, a direct, ambitious Greek winger with room to grow, and Illan Meslier on a free after his departure from Leeds, adding depth and competition in goal.
For a reigning champion, it is a quiet window. Too quiet for some. The pursuit of Guimaraes and Vinicius shows Arsenal know it cannot stay that way.
