Bruno Guimaraes pushes for Arsenal move amid Newcastle's £100m demands

Bruno Guimaraes has moved his Arsenal plan into overdrive.

In the wake of Brazil’s shock World Cup exit to Norway, the Newcastle United midfielder has accelerated his bid to leave St James’ Park this summer, with his camp stepping up talks over a switch to the Emirates.

Those close to the negotiations say Guimaraes does not want to report back for pre-season on Tyneside if a deal can be thrashed out in time. He wants clarity, and he wants it quickly.

Newcastle, though, are not blinking.

The club have flatly rejected any suggestion they would consider offers in the region of £60million. Internally, that figure has been dismissed out of hand. Senior figures insist it will take a package closer to £100m before they will even think about signing off the sale of one of their crown jewels.

World Cup exit changes the summer clock

Guimaraes’ camp had originally mapped out a slower summer. The expectation was that Brazil would still be deep in the tournament, with serious conversations about his future pushed towards the back end of the month.

Norway’s upset changed everything.

With Brazil out, Guimaraes’ representatives moved quickly. Fresh talks with Arsenal have already taken place, and the message from the player’s side has not shifted: joining Mikel Arteta’s team remains his preferred outcome.

TEAMtalk previously revealed that Guimaraes told Arsenal last month he wanted the move. That stance has now been reinforced after his early return from international duty.

Manchester City remain in the frame and have held what are described as positive discussions over a possible deal. For now, though, Arsenal are seen as leading the race.

Arsenal’s midfield obsession

Inside Arsenal’s recruitment department, central midfield has never dropped off the agenda.

Andrea Berta is juggling a busy summer, with Arsenal pursuing Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and maintaining interest in Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis. Even so, the drive to add another elite midfielder has stayed near the top of the list.

Arteta already has Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Martin Odegaard and Myles Lewis-Skelly at his disposal. The feeling in north London is that if Arsenal are serious about fighting on every front, they need one more top-tier operator in the middle of the pitch.

With Christian Norgaard expected to depart, Guimaraes has emerged as the priority target to complete that puzzle.

Newcastle stand firm

Newcastle’s stance is uncompromising. They see Guimaraes, 28, as one of the best midfielders in the world and believe their valuation reflects both his importance and the current market.

A source close to the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, outlined the player’s mindset and why he believes this is the right time to move on.

Guimaraes, they say, does not want to feel he is wasting what could be the prime years of his career. He does not view this as walking away from Newcastle or turning his back on the club. In his eyes, he has given everything to the project on Tyneside.

But he also believes that, as one of the leading midfielders in the game, he should be playing European football at the highest level.

He accepts that a transfer can only happen if a suitable offer lands on Newcastle’s desk. That point has not yet been reached, but inside his camp there is a clear hope that the situation is resolved this month.

Both player and club, the source added, are keen to avoid a drawn-out saga similar to the one involving Alexander Isak. Guimaraes still has a strong emotional connection to Newcastle and expects that to remain, whatever happens next, but he believes this is the right moment to seek a new challenge.

For now, Arsenal stay at the front of the queue. Newcastle stay firm on the fee. The gap between those positions will decide whether Guimaraes walks out at the Emirates next season or returns to St James’ Park with unfinished business.
