Barcelona’s Bardghji Faces ACL Injury Setback Before Transfer
Barcelona’s summer planning has been ripped up by a single twist of a knee.
The Spanish champions confirmed on Tuesday that 20-year-old winger Bardghji has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, a devastating injury that not only rules him out for months but also shuts down any prospect of a transfer before the window closes on September 1.
From transfer talks to operating table
The damage came in training on Monday. One routine session, one wrong movement, and medical tests quickly delivered the worst possible news: a full ACL tear, surgery required in the coming days, and a long, gruelling rehabilitation ahead.
The timing could hardly be crueller. Bardghji had been actively preparing for a move away from Barcelona after clear conversations with the club’s hierarchy about his future. Coach Flick had recently told the Sweden international, in frank terms, that first-team minutes would be extremely hard to find in the upcoming campaign and that he should look for a new club.
Barcelona acted on that reality. To shield him from exactly this kind of risk, they left him out of Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese, hoping to protect his value while transfer talks gathered pace. Interest had already arrived from across Europe, including the Premier League, with negotiations expected to accelerate as the deadline approached.
Then came Monday’s session. And everything stopped.
A cruel repeat of history
This is not Bardghji’s first encounter with this particular nightmare. It is the second time he has torn the ACL in his right knee, having suffered the same serious injury while at Copenhagen in 2024. For a 20-year-old, two major knee injuries on the same leg is a brutal burden.
Barcelona signed him last summer from Copenhagen in a deal worth around €2 million, a low-risk investment in a highly rated young winger. He featured 28 times in his debut season across all competitions, scoring twice, but most of those appearances came from the bench. He was on the fringes, useful but not central, a talent still waiting for a sustained run.
This summer pushed him further down the pecking order. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi were clear signals of where the club intended to upgrade in attack. For Bardghji, the message was obvious: to play regularly, he would likely need to go elsewhere.
Window slammed shut
That path has now vanished. With the transfer window closing on September 1, the severity of the injury effectively ends any chance of a move. No club will sign a player heading straight into surgery and months of rehabilitation; Barcelona, in turn, must now plan to support his recovery rather than negotiate his departure.
The winger will undergo surgery in the coming days and begin a long spell of rehab in Barcelona, his focus narrowed to a single objective: rebuilding the same knee for a second time and salvaging a career that had just been preparing to restart somewhere new.
For Bardghji, the next season will not be about minutes, systems, or competition for places. It will be about whether his right knee can carry the weight of his ambitions again.
