For weeks, Julián Álvarez has been the name at the top of Barcelona’s list to succeed Robert Lewandowski. Young, ruthless in the box, already proven in Europe and with Argentina – he fit the profile almost too perfectly.

But perfect targets rarely come cheap, and some simply don’t come at all.

Atlético Madrid have rejected an opening offer of €100 million and, more importantly, have refused to even enter into a conversation. The message from the Metropolitano has been blunt: Álvarez is not for sale.

According to Matteo Moretto on Radio MARCA, Barcelona have now internally branded the operation “impossible”. Not complicated. Not difficult. Impossible. For a club that has spent the summer pushing at every angle, that word carries weight.

Barcelona’s insistence met a brick wall. Atlético never shifted, not publicly, not privately. Even Álvarez’s wish to leave – communicated during the window – has not moved the hierarchy. Los Colchoneros see the 26‑year‑old as a pillar of their project and have behaved like it.

Deco tried to crack the code. The sporting director travelled to Madrid this week to meet Álvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, in one last attempt to find a crack in Atlético’s position. The idea lingered that, once back in training next week, Álvarez might again push to go, adding pressure from the inside.

It has not mattered. The Rojiblancos have held the line, and Barcelona, as of today, are treating the chase as a lost cause.

Market closes in on Barcelona

When a primary target collapses this late in the window, the real test of a sporting department begins. Barcelona now have to pivot quickly in a market that has already started to close around them.

Some of the safety nets have already disappeared.

• Joao Pedro, one of the backup options, is set to sign a new contract at Chelsea, locking him away from any late raid.
• Eli Junior Kroupi, another name on the list, has been sidelined for months with injury, removing him from the immediate equation.
• Fisnik Asllani, also tracked, is heading to RB Leipzig.

One by one, the alternatives have thinned out.

So the Catalans are back in a familiar position: needing a starting centre-forward, with limited time and even more limited room for error.

Vlahović waits, Osimhen offered

Into that vacuum step two heavyweight names.

Dusan Vlahović, now a free agent after leaving Juventus, has effectively been on standby. The Serbian striker has been waiting for Barcelona to make a move, keeping his options open while Besiktas push hard to secure his signature. His profile is clear: a classic No. 9, strong, direct, penalty-box driven. He would not cost a fee, but his wages and commission package would demand serious commitment.

On another track, Victor Osimhen has been offered to the club. The Nigerian forward, one of the most explosive strikers in Europe, represents the kind of marquee signing that instantly changes an attack. But an offer is not the same as an agreement, and any deal for Osimhen would sit at the very top end of what Barcelona can realistically attempt.

This is the crossroads.

The Álvarez dream, for now, is over. The market is moving, the options are shrinking, and the clock is ticking. Barcelona know exactly what they need up front.

The question now is simple: who are they willing – and able – to bet their season on?
