Barcelona's Pursuit of Julian Alvarez: Laporta Sets the Terms
Joan Laporta does not often bother with subtlety. Speaking in the United States with a World Cup semi-final looming between Spain and France, the Barcelona president drew a hard line over the club’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez – and sent a clear message to Atletico Madrid in the process.
Laporta lays down the terms
Barcelona want Alvarez. That much is not in doubt. Their interest in the former Manchester City forward is real, their proposal formal, and their patience limited.
“We’re not going to dance to anyone’s tune. We set the pace here,” Laporta told reporters, underlining that Barcelona will not be dragged into a drawn-out saga on someone else’s terms.
“We’ve made an offer, but it’s not an open-ended offer, it’s not an unlimited offer. We’ll see how long it remains valid. We’ve already expressed our intention to sign the player the coach and the technical staff have requested. We like him a lot and I think he’s a fantastic player.”
This is not the language of a club tentatively testing the market. It is the stance of a president who believes Barcelona have done their part and now expects an answer.
Managing a delicate relationship
Deals between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid rarely come without tension. From boardroom politics to direct competition on the pitch, the relationship between the two has long been complicated, especially when major names are involved.
Laporta moved quickly to cool any suggestion of open conflict. He insisted that communication lines with the Metropolitano remain intact and that any misunderstanding over the proposal for Alvarez has already been addressed.
“I understand we have a very good relationship with them. There was some confusion regarding the offer we made, and I clarified it. We haven’t put any more pressure on them,” he said.
“I simply stated that, from the moment they have an alternative, this offer remains valid. And that’s where it ended. It hasn’t progressed any further, for the time being.”
The message is pointed. Barcelona will wait, but not forever. Atletico know the terms, know the timing, and know that the Catalans believe they have put a fair deal on the table.
A World Cup star in demand
While the executives talk, Alvarez continues to let his football do the loudest work. The forward’s stock has soared again at the 2026 World Cup, where he delivered a spectacular winner for Argentina against Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
At 26, he is entering his prime. Last season he hit 20 goals in all competitions for Atletico, a return that underpins why Barcelona’s technical staff have identified him as their preferred option to reshape the frontline.
It is not just the numbers. His clinical edge, movement, and tactical versatility have convinced Barcelona that he is the man to lead the next phase of their attack. A player comfortable across the front line, able to press, link play, and finish – exactly the profile they have been seeking.
Arsenal circle, but Spain still calls
Barcelona are not alone. Arsenal are pushing hard, eager to muscle in on the deal before their pre-season gets fully underway. The Premier League club see an opportunity and are trying to move quickly enough to steal in front of the Catalans.
Reports suggest Alvarez would rather remain in Spain, a preference that tilts the situation towards Barcelona and Atletico. That inclination could yet prove decisive if and when a final decision lands on his desk.
For the moment, though, Alvarez has other priorities.
Argentina are preparing for a heavyweight semi-final against England on Wednesday, a tie loaded with history, pressure, and global attention. His focus, by all accounts, remains fixed on that stage, not on the noise around his future.
