Barcelona's Urgent Pursuit of Julián Álvarez as Centre Forward

The void left by Robert Lewandowski has dragged on for a season too long, and Ferran Torres’ public doubts about his future have only sharpened the urgency. Flick doesn’t want a stopgap. He wants a reference point for the next cycle. Inside the club, that name has been underlined for months: Julián Álvarez.
Deco on the road, Barça on the offensive
Deco has taken that message onto the road. The Sporting Director travelled to Madrid in recent hours with a clear brief: find a way through Atlético’s wall. The operation has been in motion since last year, but every week that passes without a breakthrough raises the stakes a little higher.
Atlético have drawn a hard line. They have already turned down a €100 million offer from Barcelona and point to the release clause, set at around €500 million, as the only figure that truly matters. For now, they refuse to negotiate. No discounts, no creative formulas.
Barça, though, are not walking away. At Spotify Camp Nou they remain convinced that Álvarez can be prised away, and Deco’s trip is designed to do more than just knock on Atlético’s door again. The priority now is to sit down with the Argentine international’s camp, define a joint strategy and test, in real terms, how far this transfer can go.
Winning over Álvarez
The visit to Madrid also carries a symbolic weight. By turning up in person, Deco is sending a message directly to Álvarez and his entourage: Barcelona are serious, and he is still at the top of their list. No change of plan, no downgrade in status. He is the target.
For the player, that matters. Any lingering doubts about Barça’s commitment are being addressed face to face.
From Barcelona’s perspective, the next key move may not come from an office but from the dressing room. Álvarez is due to report on the 10th for pre-season under Diego Simeone, and the Catalan club believes his stance could become decisive. A firm, clear desire to leave, expressed to Atlético, is seen in the Barça offices as the pressure point that might finally crack the deal open.
If the forward pushes, the situation changes. If he doesn’t, Atlético can keep hiding behind the clause.
Flick’s clock is ticking
Inside Barça, there is confidence, but not blind faith. The club intend to exhaust every realistic avenue to bring Álvarez in for the 26-27 season, yet they are equally determined not to lose their head in the process. There will be no “astronomical” bid that blows apart their financial planning.
Flick’s impatience is another factor. The German coach has repeated his demand for a centre forward, again on Monday, and the sporting department knows it cannot drag this saga out indefinitely. Barcelona will not wait forever for one man, no matter how highly they rate him.
For now, though, Álvarez remains the main objective. Within the club, they still see his signing as feasible, not fantasy.
And that is why this week looms so large. By the time it ends, Barcelona expect to know whether Julián Álvarez is a battle they can realistically win — or a dream they will have to abandon as Flick keeps asking the same, simple question: where is my No 9?
