Barcelona to Leave Camp Nou Again Next Season After €510m Funding Approval
Barcelona will have to move out of Camp Nou next season as they begin the installation of a new stadium roof. This comes after the club secured a fresh funding package worth €510 million (£438m/$584m) to support the ongoing redevelopment work. During this period, the team will return to the Montjuic Olympic Stadium, postponing their full return to Camp Nou until January 2028.
Temporary Relocation Confirmed
The club's treasurer, Ferran Olive, has confirmed that the first team will play home matches at the Olympic Stadium while construction is underway. The extensive works are part of the Espai Barca project, which continues to face delays but remains ambitious in scope.
Board Approves Staggered Funding Plan
After repeated setbacks, the Barcelona board took decisive financial action to keep the project moving forward. Club members recently voted to approve a significant injection of funds aimed at covering the increased costs and delays in the redevelopment.
Financial Breakdown of the Funding
- First tranche: €300 million dedicated to completing Camp Nou with expanded facilities and new technology.
- Second tranche: €210 million raised through two Media Notes issues of €105 million each; one issued in July 2026 and the other planned for late 2026.
This additional borrowing brings the total projected cost of the stadium upgrade close to €2 billion (£1.7bn/$2.3bn), reflecting the project's growing scale.
Future Stadium Capacity and Events
Currently, Camp Nou holds 62,000 fans, but capacity will rise to 75,000 this season as the third tier gradually reopens. The renovated stadium is expected to welcome 95,000 spectators from January 2028, eventually reaching 105,000 for the 2028-29 season. UEFA has already selected Camp Nou to host the 2029 Champions League final, promising a spectacular showcase once the renovations are complete.
