Barcelona Cancels World Cup Tribute for Spanish Stars Amid Rising Tensions
Barcelona has withdrawn plans to honor its eight Spanish World Cup champions before their La Liga match against Athletic Club. The decision follows clashes between fans and police, leading the club to abandon the pre-match ceremony at Camp Nou due to heightened political tensions.
Tensions Escalate at Camp Nou
The celebration was intended to recognize the players who helped Spain win the World Cup in New Jersey last month. This tribute was scheduled for Thursday's home game versus Athletic Club. Other La Liga teams across Spain have already acknowledged their national champions during recent home matches.
Suddenly, Barcelona halted the event after violence erupted during Sunday’s 5-0 victory over Elche. Traveling supporters faced police aggression, and their pro-independence Estelada flags were confiscated by authorities. This harsh reaction prompted the club’s leadership to intervene and change the matchday plans.
Joan Laporta Explains the Decision
On Wednesday, club president Joan Laporta confirmed the cancellation of the pre-game festivities, citing the current atmosphere as unsuitable for celebration.
"The ceremony to honour the world champions will not take place. It is not being held in the most appropriate context," Laporta said. "The Royal Spanish Football Federation understands this decision."
Laporta also supported fans’ rights to display the Estelada, a key symbol of Catalan independence. He stressed that football should unite people rather than provoke conflict.
"The Estelada represents the mindset of many Barca supporters and Catalans. It is part of freedom of expression," he added.
Condemnation of Police Actions
The main issue revolves around how fans displaying regional symbols are treated, a sensitive matter in Spain. Laporta strongly criticized the police for their actions against supporters.
"We condemn and reject the disproportionate action of the national police officers who assaulted Barca fans for carrying the Estelada before the Elche game," he stated. "We demand that appropriate punishment and sanctions follow once the facts have been confirmed."
He called for measures to protect fans from harm or discrimination by security forces.
"We hope that appropriate punishment will help ensure that Catalans and Barca fans can carry the flag without fear of physical harm or stigmatisation by the State's security forces."
Focus Returns to the Pitch
Despite the off-field unrest overshadowing preparations, Barcelona now turns its attention to football. The team will host Athletic Club on Thursday evening without the planned tribute.
They aim to build on their commanding 5-0 win over Elche and keep up momentum in La Liga, even as political tensions continue to make headlines.
