Barça's Youngsters Shine with 4-1 Victory Over Europa
Barcelona’s pre-season under Hansi Flick moved up a gear on Friday evening, even if almost nobody was there to see it.
Behind closed doors, on a training pitch rather than a grand stage, a youthful Barça side brushed aside Club Esportiu Europa 4-1, offering an early glimpse of what Flick wants this team to become: energetic, aggressive, and unafraid to trust young legs.
A First Half for the Future
The line-up told its own story. Wojciech Szczęsny started in goal, but in front of him Flick went bold, handing minutes to a string of youngsters: Hector Fort, Andreas Christensen, Gerard Martín, Jofre Torrents at the back; Guille Fernández and Brian Fariñas in midfield; Roony Bardghji, Ibrahim Diarra, Hamza Abdelkarim and Shane Kluivert further forward.
It looked more like an academy showcase than a routine friendly. That was the point.
Diarra struck first, opening the scoring and settling any early nerves. It was the sort of contribution that sticks in a new coach’s mind in these low-profile games. Fort then underlined his own case with Barça’s second around the half-hour mark, stepping out from defence and getting on the scoresheet to cap a confident display.
Europa responded before the interval, halving the deficit and reminding Flick that this young back line still has lessons to learn. Even in a training match, concentration slips get punished.
Flick Rings the Changes
The restart brought a different Barcelona. Flick rotated heavily, as expected at this stage of pre-season. Marc-André ter Stegen came on in goal, joined by Álex González, Xavi Espart, Toni Fernandez, Marc Casado, Tommy Marques and Orian Goren among the wave of changes.
The pattern of the game, though, stayed the same. Barcelona controlled the ball, pinned Europa back and went hunting for more goals.
The pressure told again when Ebrima Tunkara made it 3-1, stretching the advantage and effectively killing off any hope of a Europa comeback. González then added the fourth, completing the scoring and putting a deserved gloss on the performance.
On the sidelines, one notable figure watched without kicking a ball. New signing Karim Adeyemi was present but did not feature, having only just met his new team-mates in training earlier in the day. His time will come; this night belonged to others.
Early Signs Before England
For Flick, the scoreline is secondary. What matters more is rhythm, structure, and how quickly his ideas take root. A 4-1 win, with goals spread around and youngsters stepping up, is exactly the kind of quiet progress a new coach wants from a closed-door run-out.
The level will rise soon. Barcelona’s next pre-season friendly comes in England, where they will travel to St George’s Park for a training camp and a sterner set of sessions under Flick’s demanding gaze.
If this first glimpse is any indication, some of the names that shone against Europa may be hearing their names a lot more often in the weeks ahead.
