Arsenal, though, are not going away.
Mikel Arteta’s side are already deep into their rebuild. Bruno Guimaraes is set to become their fourth signing of the window, following Piero Hincapie, Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis. A winger and a centre-back remain on the list after they failed to land Vinicius Junior, and Konsa has moved to the top of that defensive shortlist.
Villa have been expecting the next move. Reports this week suggested they were braced for a fresh bid after Arsenal’s first attempt earlier in the summer fell flat. Now the numbers around that opening offer have started to emerge, and they have not gone down well in Birmingham.
According to The Daily Mail, Villa are holding out for around £60 million. Arsenal’s first proposal? Believed to be little more than half of that figure. A bid that low, for a first-choice England international under a long contract, was never going to land softly.
Co-owner Nassef Sawiris, a man not known for meek acceptance, was said to be particularly unimpressed. The offer was viewed inside the club as a low-ball attempt to test their resolve rather than a serious starting point for negotiation.
Yet while the hierarchy bristles, the mood among the players is different. The same report suggests members of the Villa squad are increasingly resigned to losing Konsa. They have seen this pattern before: a key performer shines, a Champions League club comes calling, and the numbers eventually reach a point where resistance becomes symbolic rather than realistic.
Guimaraes is due to sign for £75 million this week, underlining the scale of Arsenal’s ambition and their willingness to pay for the right player. Vinicius Junior looks set to remain at Real Madrid, but Arsenal have not stepped back from Konsa. If anything, the urgency has sharpened as pre-season injuries bite and the need for a dependable, Premier League-hardened defender becomes more obvious.
For Villa, the equation is brutal but clear. Hold firm at around £60 million and hope Arsenal blink. Or risk carrying an unsettled player into a season where expectations have never been higher under Emery.
For Arsenal, the message from Villa is equally simple: if you want Ezri Konsa to plug the gap left by Saliba and ease the strain on Timber and White, you will have to pay the going rate for a defender who has quietly become one of the most valuable in the division.
