Asian Games Cricket Quarterfinals Cancelled by Rain, India and Pakistan Advance Without Playing

Rain washed out the men's cricket quarterfinals at the 2026 Asian Games, allowing India and Pakistan to reach the semifinals without delivering a single ball. Matches scheduled in Nisshin were abandoned due to persistent rain and wet conditions, sparking criticism of the event's organisation.

Quarterfinals Abandoned Due to Weather

Pakistan progressed after their quarterfinal against Hong Kong was called off because of rain, with the team moving forward based on higher T20I rankings. Moments later, India's quarterfinal clash against Afghanistan was also cancelled before the toss, thanks to ongoing bad weather and an unplayable outfield. Since India held a superior ICC T20I ranking as of July 23, 2026, they advanced automatically.

For several days leading up to the matches, Nagoya had experienced steady rainfall, making even a shortened game impossible given the lack of proper facilities to handle the wet conditions.

Afghanistan Players Express Frustration

Mohammad Akram Zazai of Afghanistan expressed disappointment, believing his team was ready to compete and could have challenged India. He remarked,

"We are here for the match but unfortunately it rained. The rain started yesterday, so hard luck for us. We would have been happy to play here with India - our players are in form."

Zazai added that since his team had already played twice on the same ground, they knew the conditions well, but the rain spoiled everything. He wished even a few overs could have been played, saying,

"We would be happy if five or six overs were played on this ground instead of the match being abandoned. Our team is so good, even in the short format. We just wanted to play the match so that there was a chance."

Fans Criticise Organisers Over Poor Ground Management

Social media users voiced anger at the organisers, blaming inadequate preparation and lack of equipment to dry the field for the abandonment. Comments included:

  • @Ajmalzadran18: "Absolute incompetence by the Asian Games organizers! They don't even have proper equipment to dry the outfield in 2026. Because of their poor ground management, the match was abandoned and Afghan Abdalyan is out. Why host such big events when you can't even manage a wet field?"
  • @Crictologist: "So Afghanistan and Hong Kong both got knocked out from Asian Games without even playing the Quarter Finals. Shame!! I thought the pitch was good enough to have a good game for both of these teams but rain ruined it all."
  • @Rajiv1841: "India vs Afghanistan QF is abandoned due to rain. I mean they abandoned the game even 40 minutes before its scheduled start time. This got to be some joke, I mean!"
  • @Amitsinha4444: "Non-cricket country hosting it with no idea of how to prepare for hosting cricket matches. If you remember the outfield in the India vs Japan game, it was worse than International test match."
  • @doc_hormone: "What's happening in Asian Games cricket? All matches abandoned."

Poor Preparation Overshadows Uncontrollable Weather

While the weather itself cannot be controlled, many argue the organisers should have been better prepared. With rain forecast known in advance, the failure to bring covers, drying machines, or super soakers frustrated fans and players alike.

A semifinal reached without any actual play leaves a hollow feeling around the tournament. Cricket deserves more thoughtful planning at the Asian Games to secure its future as a competitive event rather than one overshadowed by logistical failings.
