Mikel Arteta Praises Mikel Merino as One of the Most Intelligent Players in Arsenal's Carabao Cup Win
Mikel Arteta praised Mikel Merino for his smart play and unique qualities following Arsenal’s 4-2 victory against Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup. The Spanish midfielder captained the side and scored, earning praise despite limited Premier League minutes this season.
Arsenal Advances to Fourth Round
The Gunners continued their strong start to the season with a comfortable win at Portman Road on Tuesday night. Although 16-year-old Max Dowman stole the spotlight with two goals, Arteta emphasized the importance of experienced players like Merino and Noni Madueke, who also scored during the match.
Merino wore the captain’s armband for the third-round tie, leading the Premier League champions in a commanding away performance.
Arteta Highlights Merino's Football Intelligence and Versatility
After the game, Arteta singled out Merino for his exceptional football brain and selfless nature. Despite limited playing time this season, the 30-year-old has become an important squad member.
"He’s unbelievable," Arteta said. "First of all, he’s one of the most intelligent players I’ve worked with. His personality is just full of... I don’t know, he wants to give for everybody. He thinks about everything, about everyone."
The manager also noted Merino’s tactical flexibility.
"He has qualities that are unique in football and in our team. His ability to arrive in the box, play different positions, and link up with teammates is remarkable. As a midfielder, his capacity to score goals like tonight is something special," Arteta added.
Merino Proud to Wear the Captain's Armband
Since joining Arsenal from Real Sociedad for £31.6 million in August 2024, Merino has scored 16 goals in 84 appearances across all competitions. Though he has mostly been used as a substitute in the league, making just four appearances this season, the Spaniard expressed great pride in leading the team.
"It’s a huge honour," Merino said. "I’m proud to represent this club wearing the armband – many legends have worn it before me. It brings me happiness, and I always try to do my best to represent this club because I understand how important it is."
Looking Ahead: Brighton Challenge and Carabao Cup Draw
Arsenal will find out their next Carabao Cup opponent after Manchester United’s match with Brighton concludes. Some Premier League teams like Tottenham and Leeds have already exited the competition early, leaving the Gunners well placed to pursue the trophy.
Meanwhile, Arteta’s squad now turns attention back to the Premier League with a demanding trip to Brighton scheduled for Saturday. Securing a positive result there will be vital to keep their momentum before the international break.
