Why Mikel Arteta Halted Arsenal's Deadline Day Move for Malick Fofana Before Sunderland Signed Him

Concerns About Premier League Intensity

After losing key attackers like Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal wanted to strengthen their forward options. Yet, Arteta worried that the 21-year-old Belgian might find it tough to handle the physicality and pace of England's top flight. Even though Fofana has clear technical skill and speed, the staff questioned whether he could make an immediate impact in a squad aiming for titles.

Financial Issues and UEFA Rules

The transfer complications went beyond just tactics. Lyon needed around £30 million to sell Fofana after missing out on the Champions League, but Arsenal preferred a loan deal to avoid breaching UEFA spending regulations. This disagreement over payment terms stalled negotiations.

Additionally, Arsenal had already missed out on other attacking targets like Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior. A last-minute attempt to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid also fell through because Alvarez showed no interest in returning to England.

Sunderland Seizes the Chance

While Arsenal stepped back, Sunderland and Crystal Palace battled fiercely for Fofana’s signature. Ultimately, Sunderland triumphed by offering a higher commission to his representatives, landing the winger on a five-year contract. This was seen as a major win for Sunderland, especially since clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea had previously shown interest.

The signing gives Sunderland a talented player rated as one of Ligue 1's brightest prospects.
