Arsenal Targets Club Brugge Defender Joaquin Seys
Arsenal’s title defence has not even begun, but the recruitment drive around Mikel Arteta is already starting to feel like a full-scale operation.
Barely weeks after prising Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, the Gunners are lining up a second move on the Belgian side, this time for highly rated defender Joaquin Seys. The 20-year-old, valued at around £30 million, has emerged as a serious option as Arsenal look to add a different profile at full-back.
They are not alone.
Manchester United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Portuguese pair Benfica and Porto are all tracking the Belgian international, whose performances at this summer’s World Cup have pushed him towards the front of the continental talent queue.
Arsenal’s calculated push
Arsenal’s interest is no passing glance. Arteta’s staff have carried out a series of detailed scouting missions on Seys, with a full dossier already compiled and placed in front of the head coach.
Arteta has been open about his desire to add quality rather than quantity, telling reporters: “Well, that's what we're trying to do. If we have the right player in the market to make us much better. We are very looking forward to that.” Seys, in Arsenal’s eyes, fits that brief: young, international, comfortable at left-back and capable of offering a different dimension in build-up.
The Gunners are preparing for a season in which every marginal gain could matter. With a Premier League title to defend and another deep European run on the agenda, depth in key positions is no luxury. It’s a necessity.
United turn to Seys after Hall setback
Over at Old Trafford, the need at full-back is more urgent and more obvious.
Manchester United’s first move was for Lewis Hall, but Newcastle United swiftly rebuffed that approach and made it clear the left-back is not for sale. That rejection has pushed United towards alternatives, with Seys now high on their list.
The £30m price tag is not expected to scare United off. The club are determined to finally address their persistent issues at full-back, with Luke Shaw’s fitness problems forcing constant reshuffles in recent seasons. With Champions League football returning, they cannot afford another campaign patched together on the flanks of their defence.
Seys, with three years left on his current deal at Club Brugge, would not come cheap or easily. Brugge are under no pressure to sell and know they hold one of the most coveted young defenders in Europe. That leverage only strengthens their hand.
Villa and Europe’s hunters join the chase
The Premier League tug-of-war does not stop with Arsenal and United.
Aston Villa are also in the market after Lucas Digne’s return to PSG left Unai Emery short at left-back. With Villa now operating as a Champions League club, the profile of their targets has shifted. Seys sits squarely in that bracket: young, battle-tested on the international stage, and capable of growing with a squad that expects to compete on multiple fronts.
From outside England, Benfica and Porto are watching closely. Both Portuguese giants have built reputations on identifying and accelerating the development of emerging talent before selling at a premium. Seys fits that model perfectly, which only adds another layer of competition.
Brugge hold the cards – for now
For all the noise around him, the situation at Club Brugge remains calm. Seys is contracted for another three years, and the Belgian club have no financial need to cash in quickly. That allows them to set a firm valuation and wait for the bidding to reach their level.
The World Cup has already done part of their work. Seys impressed on the biggest stage, and that exposure has transformed him from a promising domestic prospect into a fully fledged international asset.
Arsenal, United, Villa, Newcastle, Benfica, Porto: this is no quiet chase in the shadows. It is a race building in plain sight.
