Arsenal Signs World Cup Winner Misa Rodriguez in Ambitious Rebuild

Arsenal’s summer overhaul has a new headline act between the posts. World Cup-winning goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez has joined the club on a free transfer, becoming their sixth signing of an unapologetically ambitious window.

The 27-year-old arrives from Real Madrid after six seasons, 215 appearances and the captain’s armband. No player has featured more times for the Spanish club. Now she swaps Madrid white for Arsenal red, taking the number 16 shirt and stepping straight into one of the most competitive goalkeeping groups in the women’s game.

She will battle Daphne van Domselaar and Anneke Borbe for minutes, a duel sharpened by the fact both existing keepers endured injury-hit campaigns last year. Arsenal needed reliability. They have gone out and signed a goalkeeper who rarely misses a game.

“I’m so proud to join this great club. Arsenal is one of the top clubs in the world and I’m really excited to be part of the team and take on this new challenge,” Rodriguez said on arrival. “I want to help us compete for trophies and make more history, together with our supporters.”

That hunger fits the mood in north London. Arsenal finished second in the Women’s Super League last season and reached the semi-finals of the Women’s Champions League. Close, but not close enough for a squad that expects silverware, not near-misses.

So the club has torn into this transfer window with purpose. Georgia Stanway, Ona Batlle, Selina Cerci, Geraldine Reuteler and Lisa Baum have already come through the door to bolster Renee Slegers’ options across the pitch. Rodriguez adds experience and edge in the one position where a single mistake can flip a title race.

Her pedigree is undeniable. Since making her senior Spain debut in 2021, Rodriguez has collected 34 caps and was part of the side that lifted the 2023 Women’s World Cup, starting three matches at the tournament. She has since seen Barcelona’s Cata Coll take over the starting role for the national team, but that only sharpens the narrative: a proven international with a point to prove, joining a club desperate to turn potential into trophies.

The move also signals something else. Arsenal are not just stacking talent; they are building a spine. A captain from Real Madrid. Established internationals in key areas. Depth in positions that cost them last season when injuries bit at the wrong time.

The question now is not whether Arsenal have enough quality. It is how far this revamped squad, with Misa Rodriguez anchoring the last line of defence, can push the WSL and Europe’s elite when the 2026-27 season explodes into life.
