Arsenal Signs Ona Batlle on Free Transfer from Barcelona
Arsenal have pulled off one of the standout moves of the women’s transfer window, signing Spain international Ona Batlle on a free after her departure from Barcelona.
The 27-year-old full-back has agreed a four-year contract in north London, with an option for a further season, in a deal that underlines Arsenal’s intent to close the gap at the very top of the European game.
A serial winner arrives
Batlle leaves Barcelona with a medal collection that speaks loudly enough on its own. Across three seasons back at the club where she came through the academy, she made 114 appearances and helped deliver three consecutive league titles and two Champions League crowns.
Her final act in Barcelona colours in Europe came in May, lifting the Champions League trophy. A year earlier, she had been on the opposite side of the story, starting in the Champions League final defeat to Arsenal in 2025 – a night that clearly left its mark on both player and club.
Now she crosses the line to join the team that broke Barça hearts.
“Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I can't wait to feel the joy of playing in front of our supporters at Emirates Stadium alongside so many great players,” Batlle said. “I want to win trophies and I feel this is the right place to achieve that.”
From La Masia to London
Batlle’s journey to this point has rarely followed the easy route. A product of Barcelona’s academy, she had to leave to grow. Her senior debut came with Madrid CFF in 2017, before regular top-flight minutes at Levante sharpened her game and her reputation.
Manchester United then moved for her in 2020. In England she became one of the WSL’s standout full-backs, combining aggression in the tackle with a constant threat going forward. She made 77 appearances for United and returned to Barcelona as a fully-fledged Spain international and one of Europe’s most complete defenders.
For Spain, her influence has only grown. Batlle has already been capped 76 times and was part of the squad that won the World Cup in 2023, then reached the Euro 2025 final, losing to England. Individual recognition followed: named in the FIFA Best XI in both 2024 and 2025, she has been firmly lodged among the elite in her position.
It is understood she signed a pre-contract agreement with Arsenal earlier this year, with the club patiently waiting for their moment.
Arsenal’s intent, spelled out at full-back
Manager Renee Slegers made no attempt to play down the scale of the signing.
“I'm delighted that we've been able to bring Ona to the club,” she said. “She's a hugely experienced full-back with strong attacking intent and great physical attributes. She's a winner and we want to go for more wins together.”
Arsenal’s director of women’s football Clare Wheatley echoed that sense of ambition.
“Ona's track record at both club and international level speaks for itself. She's a proven winner with a hunger to add more trophies. We're delighted to bring one of the best defenders in the world to Arsenal.”
This is not a depth signing. This is a cornerstone. Batlle’s arrival gives Arsenal a defender who can lock down a flank and, just as importantly, drive it. Her timing in the overlap, her ability to step into midfield, her relentlessness without the ball – all of it fits a side that wants to dominate games rather than simply survive them.
She will wear the number 22 shirt at Arsenal.
A number on her back, yes. But for a club chasing titles at home and in Europe, Batlle looks far more like a turning point.
