Arsenal Complete £75 Million Signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle

Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, have finalized the acquisition of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United. The clubs confirmed the deal on Saturday, with the reported transfer fee around £75 million ($101.2 million).

Guimaraes, who captained Newcastle and spent four and a half seasons at St James' Park, has agreed to a long-term contract with the Gunners. He arrives at Emirates Stadium after helping Newcastle claim the 2023 League Cup, their first major trophy in 54 years.

The 28-year-old is Arsenal's most notable signing of this transfer window, joining fellow newcomers Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis.

Strengthening Arsenal's Midfield

Andrea Berta, Arsenal’s sporting director, praised Guimaraes’s versatility and contribution:

"With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team. Bruno can play as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player. He combines quality with quantity and consistently provides goals and assists each season."
"His presence will help Mikel Arteta develop our playing style further and boost internal competition, which is key when aiming for top trophies."

Newcastle described the fee as one of the highest ever received for a player aged 28 or over. Guimaraes had been linked with Arsenal previously in January 2022 before moving from Lyon to Newcastle.

Career and Impact at Newcastle

Guimaraes made 195 appearances for Newcastle, scoring 31 goals during his time there. Under manager Eddie Howe, he was instrumental in ending the club's long wait for silverware.

"This is one of the toughest decisions of my life," Guimaraes said in a statement. "When I arrived, the club faced challenges, and I am incredibly proud of what we achieved together. I truly fell in love with this place."

Howe resigned last week and German Matthias Jaissle has since taken over as Newcastle manager.

Looking Ahead at Arsenal

Guimaraes will compete with Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino for a midfield spot. Arsenal will open their season against Manchester City in the Community Shield next Sunday, followed by a league match against newly promoted Coventry five days later.
