Arsenal's Search for a Left Winger After Vinicius Junior's Contract
Arsenal have been forced to rip up their dream scenario on the left wing. Vinicius Junior is staying in Madrid, and he is staying for a long time.
The Brazilian has agreed a new six-year contract with Real Madrid, shutting the door on a move that Arsenal genuinely believed they could pull off. The London club made a serious play for the 26-year-old and pushed talks on personal terms to an advanced stage. The lure of the Bernabeu, and another long-term deal at the heart of Real’s project, proved too strong.
So the plan shifts, but it does not shrink. Arsenal still want a top-class left winger, and the shortlist is already drawn up.
Arteta’s admiration, Atletico’s resistance
At the top of that list sits Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid. Mikel Arteta is described as a huge admirer of the Argentine, seeing him as the kind of high-energy, high-impact wide forward who can slot straight into Arsenal’s aggressive, front-foot game.
There is a problem. Atletico have made their stance brutally clear: Alvarez is not for sale. Barcelona’s interest underlines his value, yet even that pressure has not moved the Madrid club. For now, Alvarez looks like the fantasy option — the one Arsenal want, but the one they cannot prise away without something dramatic changing.
Barcola in demand
The more realistic battle may be in Paris. Bradley Barcola has emerged as another serious option, a winger with the profile and age to grow with Arteta’s squad.
Barcola is under contract at Paris Saint-Germain until 2028, but he is refusing to sign a new deal, a stand-off that has alerted some of Europe’s heavyweights. Liverpool are preparing a move and are set to launch a €115m bid. PSG, though, value the Frenchman at around €150m and will not be pushed around easily.
If Arsenal want Barcola, they will be walking straight into a bidding war with a direct Premier League rival and a club in Paris that has no need to sell on the cheap.
Ndiaye the costly Premier League option
The third name under serious consideration is already in England. Iliman Ndiaye has caught Arsenal’s eye after a solid campaign with Everton, where the 26-year-old produced six goals and three assists last season.
He carried that form onto the international stage, scoring for Senegal in their World Cup group game against Iraq and reinforcing the sense that he can deliver on big occasions.
Any move for Ndiaye, though, comes with its own financial headache. He is tied to Everton until 2029, which hands the Merseyside club all the leverage they need. With that length of contract and his growing importance, Everton could demand a premium fee to even entertain a sale this summer.
Vinicius Junior has chosen to stay under the Madrid lights. Arsenal now have to decide which path they take to find the winger who can change their own.
