Arsenal Open Door for Reiss Nelson's Exit to West Ham

Reiss Nelson’s Arsenal career is edging towards its crossroads, and West Ham are trying to be the club that finally gives it direction.

Talks are under way between Arsenal and West Ham over a deal for the 26-year-old winger, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Brentford and Fulham and remains on the fringes of Mikel Arteta’s plans. He returned to north London this summer, but not to a meaningful role. Arsenal are ready to move him on.

West Ham have sensed the opportunity. Preparing for a promotion tilt in the Championship, they have approached Arsenal to explore a move, with the Gunners understood to be open – even enthusiastic – about the idea. Nelson is into the final year of his contract and Arsenal have given encouragement to the Hammers as negotiations continue over the structure of a potential deal.

The key question now sits with the player. Dropping into the Championship is no small decision for a winger who has tasted Premier League football and European nights, and there is no agreement yet on his side. Personal terms have not been discussed, and Nelson is still weighing up his options.

There is interest from abroad. A Portuguese club, now managed by Marco Silva – the coach who brought Nelson to Fulham two seasons ago – are monitoring the situation, adding another layer to a decision that will shape the next phase of his career.

Arsenal’s preference is clear: a permanent sale this summer. They want a clean break if they can get it. Even so, there have been enquiries over another loan, and the club have protected themselves. Should a temporary move be sanctioned, the Gunners hold an option to extend Nelson’s contract by 12 months, ensuring they do not lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

Nelson is not the only senior player who could be heading for the exit before the window closes. Arsenal are also open to selling Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira, as they look to reshape the squad and raise funds.

Jesus, linked with Napoli, has been valued at up to £20million by Arsenal. At this stage, though, there has been no formal approach from the Italian side, despite the noise around the Brazilian’s future. Vieira, whose Arsenal career has never fully ignited, is another candidate to depart if the right offer lands on the table.

Lower down the squad hierarchy, the club are working on a different type of move. Young goalkeeper Tommy Setford is being lined up for a loan, with Arsenal keen for him to secure regular first-team football this season rather than stagnate on the fringes.

So the picture is clear enough. Arsenal are trimming, recalibrating, making room for the next iteration of Arteta’s squad. For Nelson, once tipped as a cornerstone of that future, the choice is stark: embrace a leading role in a promotion chase with West Ham, or hold out for a different route back to the top.
