Arsenal Pursues Alvarez as Guimaraes Deal Nears Completion
The transfer window is drifting into its dangerous phase now, the point where plans harden into reality and big clubs discover whether their grand summer visions actually stand up to negotiation.
Across England and Europe, the same names keep circling the radar: Julian Alvarez, Bruno Guimaraes, Enzo Fernandez, Ronald Araujo. The money is huge, the stakes even bigger.
Arsenal pivot from Vinicius to Alvarez – and close on Guimaraes
Arsenal’s pursuit of a marquee forward has already taken one heavy blow. Vinicius Jr has chosen to extend his stay at Real Madrid until 2032, despite the Gunners coming close to agreeing personal terms. The charm offensive from north London was serious; the answer from Madrid was definitive.
So Arsenal have had to improvise.
Julian Alvarez has moved to the top of Mikel Arteta’s list. Having missed out on both Vinicius and Morgan Rogers, Arsenal are expected to reignite their push for the Argentina international. Reports suggest personal terms on a contract are already in place, even if Alvarez is thought to favour a move to Barcelona. A return to the Premier League is not off the table, though, and that keeps Arsenal in the conversation.
Any deal for Alvarez would cast a shadow over Viktor Gyokeres’s prospects of a move, with the Gunners unlikely to commit heavily to two centre-forwards in one window.
Arteta’s search for attacking depth does not end there. Arsenal have identified three alternatives after the Vinicius setback: Alvarez, Bradley Barcola and Iliman Ndiaye. Barcola appeals, but Liverpool are currently ahead in negotiations and PSG’s £130m valuation is far beyond Arsenal’s current stance. Ndiaye remains another live option.
While the forward hunt plays out, the club’s biggest midfield move is all but done.
Newcastle have effectively confirmed Bruno Guimaraes’s switch to the Emirates. The Brazil international has passed his medical, with an official announcement expected shortly after the two clubs finally found common ground on a fee. The deal is understood to be worth around £75m, potentially rising to £80m, making Guimaraes Arsenal’s third signing of the summer after Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis.
Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson has hinted that Arsenal initially tried to drive the price down, but in the end the Gunners have paid close to the full premium for a player they believe transforms their midfield.
Liverpool move aggressively for Araujo and chase Barcola
At Anfield, Liverpool have responded to a defensive injury crisis with one of the most eye-catching moves of the window.
The club have agreed a season-long loan for Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo, according to widespread reports, in a deal that includes an option to buy next summer if the 27-year-old impresses. Fabrizio Romano reports that a verbal agreement is in place and that the move has been approved on the Barcelona side by Deco.
It is a bold play: a leader at Camp Nou, dropped into a back line that needs both presence and personality.
Liverpool are not stopping there. They are pushing hard for PSG winger Bradley Barcola as they look to add another weapon to their attack. Talks between the clubs have taken place, but the gap in valuation is wide, with PSG demanding a substantial fee for the France international.
The tug-of-war is complicated by Arsenal’s interest. The Gunners are monitoring Barcola and could yet try to hijack Liverpool’s move as they continue to search for that elusive Vinicius replacement. For now, Liverpool remain firmly in the race for the 23-year-old, but the numbers will have to move.
Manchester City plan life after Rodri – and target Enzo Fernandez
Over at Manchester City, the champions are bracing for a seismic change in midfield. Barcelona have already seen a £38.6m bid for Rodri rejected, with City holding out for a fee closer to £68.5m. The initial offer was so far below that City have not even entertained serious club-to-club talks yet, but Barcelona are expected to return with a second proposal for the former Atletico Madrid man.
City, typically, are planning two steps ahead.
Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Enzo Fernandez has emerged as a priority target for Enzo Maresca, who is keen on a reunion with his former vice-captain. The club are working on two midfield additions on top of the completed signing of Elliot Anderson, but any move for Fernandez will be complicated and expensive.
City are also keen on Ayyoub Bouaddi, who caught the eye during the recent World Cup with Morocco, with talks already underway. If Rodri does eventually leave for Barcelona, City intend to have their replacements lined up before the ink is dry.
Manchester United and Chelsea juggle needs and exits
Manchester United’s search is more specific but no less urgent. They are desperate for a new left-back and have now admitted defeat in their attempts to sign Lewis Hall, after Newcastle ruled out a sale. The focus has turned to Jorge Salinas as United scramble for a solution before the season beds in.
Up front, United are casting an eye to the future. The club have joined Arsenal in tracking Inter Milan striker Pio Esposito. Both sides sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old during pre-season, and Arsenal have been following him for several months.
Publicly, Inter describe Esposito as “untouchable”. Privately, they have set an asking price of around £73m. The player is understood to be very open to a move to the Premier League, setting up the possibility of a straight fight between Arsenal and United for one of Serie A’s most intriguing young forwards.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are moving pieces in both directions. They are set to confirm the arrival of Pep Chavarria, but the bigger story is at the other end of the squad list. Enzo Fernandez and Pedro Neto could both be prised away by Manchester City, with Maresca’s side looking to reshape their midfield and wide options in one swoop.
If City get their way, Chelsea’s summer could change tone very quickly.
Tottenham spread the net for firepower
Across north London, Tottenham are working through their own attacking shortlist.
The club are in talks over a move for Villarreal striker Georges Mikautadze, with the Georgia international firmly on Spurs’ radar as they look to add more goals to Ange Postecoglou’s squad. Mikautadze has impressed since joining Villarreal last summer in a deal worth around €30m, and his profile fits Tottenham’s desire for a mobile, aggressive forward.
Cody Gakpo and Savinho are also of interest as Spurs cast the net wide. At the back, Micky van de Ven has agreed a new contract, a significant piece of business that locks down one of the Premier League’s most promising defenders.
The message from Tottenham is clear: build around the core, but keep swinging in the market.
A window defined by brinkmanship
Across the board, the same pattern is emerging. Clubs are chasing the same targets, paying the same premium, and refusing to blink first.
Arsenal want Alvarez while Liverpool chase Barcola, with both clubs aware the other is lurking. Manchester City are weighing up life without Rodri even as Barcelona prepare another bid. Newcastle have cashed in on Guimaraes, Manchester United are scrambling for a left-back, and Tottenham are trying to strike before rivals move for the same forwards.
The money will move. The question is who moves fastest, and who is left explaining why their big summer plan never quite made it off the whiteboard.
