Arsenal's Last-Minute Bid for Lautaro Martinez After Missing Out on Julian Alvarez
In the final days of the summer transfer window, Arsenal made a surprising move to sign Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez. This came after their efforts to secure Julian Alvarez fell through and following the departure of Gabriel Jesus. The Gunners were desperate to add a sharp finisher to their attack as the Premier League season got underway.
Gabriel Heinze Leads Talks with Martinez
The club’s assistant manager, Gabriel Heinze, personally reached out to Martinez during negotiations, trying to persuade the Argentine forward to join Mikel Arteta's squad. Martinez, 29, remains a prolific goal scorer, having netted 22 times in 41 appearances last season. Arsenal saw him as the ideal striker to spearhead their frontline after bringing in players like Bruno Guimaraes and Piero Hincapie but losing attacking options.
Alvarez and Osimhen Options Close
Initially, Arsenal prioritized signing Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, but Alvarez preferred a move to Barcelona. Meanwhile, a potential deal for Victor Osimhen from Galatasaray was also explored but failed due to complications late in the window. These setbacks increased Arsenal’s focus on Martinez.
Inter Milan Holds Firm on Martinez
Despite interest from Arsenal and direct contact from Heinze, Inter Milan refused to consider selling Martinez, who still has three years left on his contract. The club views the Argentina international as untouchable and is determined to keep him.
"No doubt I would like to retire at this club," Martinez said in May. "It’s hard for me to imagine myself anywhere else these days. You never know in football but if they don’t kick me out, I’m staying here."
He added that while offers from England and Spain are flattering, his life is settled in Milan, where he has roots including a restaurant and his children’s schooling. "I feel good, because I’m happy," Martinez explained.
"You never know when it comes to football. As long as they want me, those who are needed at Inter will be here. Of course, as I always say, it happens in every job. When you’re no longer needed, they eventually send you away. But right now I’m here with all my heart, just like I was on day one."
Arteta Faces Forward Line Challenges
Failing to land a top striker leaves Arteta with tough decisions moving forward. Although Kai Havertz started the season strongly, he is often seen as a versatile forward rather than a traditional number nine. Viktor Gyokeres remains an option but has not played in either of Arsenal’s first two Premier League matches. This lack of game time may reflect Arteta’s uncertainty about his readiness, which helps explain why Arsenal pushed hard to find reinforcements in attack.
