Arsenal Targets Guimaraes as Newcastle Pursues Froholdt
Arsenal’s summer plan has a clear headline: bring Bruno Guimaraes to north London and build the window around him.
They have already made their move. An opening bid went in to Newcastle on Monday and was swiftly rejected, but that has not cooled Arsenal’s intent or the player’s interest. Far from it.
Guimaraes, currently in Spain with his Newcastle team-mates for their pre-season camp, has made it known he wants the switch to the Emirates, according to Standard Sport. Away from the noise of the market, he has joined up with the squad, trained, worked, smiled for the cameras – but his future is being fought over elsewhere.
Reports elsewhere suggest the Brazil international has agreed personal terms on a five-year deal with Arsenal. That part of the puzzle, it seems, is not the problem. The negotiation now is between clubs, not player and suitor, and there is a growing belief across the deal that an agreement can be struck in the coming days.
Newcastle, though, are not standing still.
Newcastle move on Froholdt
As Arsenal circle around Guimaraes, Newcastle appear to be lining up the next man in their midfield. According to O Jogo, they have made their first concrete move for Porto’s Victor Froholdt, contacting the Dane’s representatives to explore a possible transfer.
It is an early, cautious step, but a telling one. Newcastle have been burned before in the market over the last 12 months, turned down publicly by targets and left to pick up the pieces. This time, they are sounding out Froholdt’s interest before going anywhere near Porto with a formal bid.
That, in itself, hints at how complicated this could become.
Froholdt has been clear about his stance. Fresh from being named Primeira Liga’s Player of the Season, he has repeatedly underlined his happiness at Porto and his focus on the title race. He has not agitated for a move. Quite the opposite.
“People talk about taking the next step, but for me Porto is already a huge club,” he said recently. “I am focused on the next league match. I like being here. Now we are going all out for the championship.”
Those are not the words of a player pushing to leave.
On top of that, Porto have yet to receive any formal approach from Newcastle. The only contact so far has been with the player’s camp. Even if that changes, Froholdt’s £73.4 million release clause looms large over any negotiation. It gives Porto leverage, and it gives Newcastle a serious financial decision to make at the same time as they juggle Guimaraes’s future.
A chain reaction in midfield
This is what the modern transfer window looks like at the top level: one move triggers another, and every decision has a knock-on effect.
Arsenal want Guimaraes as their first major signing of the summer, a statement addition to Mikel Arteta’s midfield. Guimaraes wants Arsenal. Newcastle, aware of the growing inevitability around a possible exit, are quietly testing the water with Froholdt.
Yet Froholdt is not pushing for an exit, Porto are under no pressure to sell, and the price is steep. For Newcastle, replacing Guimaraes may prove harder than resisting Arsenal’s first bid.
The next few days will show who blinks first: Arsenal in their pursuit, Newcastle in their valuation, or Froholdt in his loyalty to Porto and the title chase.
