Arsenal's Illan Meslier Linked to Marseille Move Weeks After Signing

Illan Meslier, who joined Arsenal this summer, is reportedly being linked with a swift exit from the club. Despite signing in July, the goalkeeper has only featured for 45 minutes under Mikel Arteta, raising speculation about his future.

Potential Transfer to Marseille

According to Foot Mercato, Marseille have targeted Meslier as their main candidate for a new goalkeeper before the transfer window closes. The French club needs to replace Geronimo Rulli, who recently moved to Manchester City.

Arsenal’s Goalkeeper Situation

Mikel Arteta has reshaped his squad following Arsenal's Premier League success and Champions League final loss to PSG last season. They made a significant signing with Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, but the goalkeeping department remains unsettled. Meslier is currently the third-choice keeper behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga. His role was meant as quality backup, but the lack of playing chances may push him towards leaving.

Looking for Regular Playtime

Meslier struggled for consistent game time at Leeds last season, losing his spot as first-choice goalkeeper. He did not feature in the Premier League, with goalkeeping duties shared between Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow, who has since transferred to Manchester United.

Marseille themselves are undergoing changes. Jeffrey De Lange, who started their opening game, might also leave before the window shuts. That would open the door for Meslier to secure regular top-flight minutes that seem unlikely at Arsenal.

Final Days Before Transfer Deadline

As the transfer window nears its end, Arsenal face a decision on whether to let Meslier go so soon after his arrival. Although they have depth at goalkeeper, losing another senior option could be risky if injuries hit Raya or Kepa.

The next few days will be telling. Arsenal aim to perfect their squad for another Premier League title defense and a strong Champions League run. Meslier’s fate depends largely on how quickly Marseille can finalize their interest.
