Arsenal Targets Bruno Guimarães in Summer Transfer Plan
Arsenal’s summer rebuild is beginning to take a clear shape – and at the heart of it, they are pushing hard to prise Bruno Guimarães away from Newcastle United.
Reports in France claimed this week that an agreement in principle is already in place between the clubs. Those claims have not been fully backed up elsewhere, but the direction of travel is obvious: Arsenal are closing in, and the deal is live.
The Athletic, in a piece primarily focused on Arsenal’s ambitious pursuit of Vinicius Junior, backed up the growing sense that Guimarães is moving to the centre of the club’s midfield plans. Their reporting stops short of confirming a done deal, yet the language is unmistakable: Arsenal are working to make the Brazilian the marquee addition in the middle of the pitch.
A clear transfer blueprint
The move for Guimarães sits within a broader, aggressive summer strategy.
Arsenal have already secured Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier, brought in Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis, and made Piero Hincapié’s stay permanent after his loan. Those deals laid the groundwork. Now comes the next phase.
The club want three more signings before the window shuts:
- A central midfielder – with Guimarães at the top of that list.
- A winger – with Vinicius the dream target, though his future remains tied to contract talks with Real Madrid.
- A centre-back – crucial cover while William Saliba recovers from injury.
The midfield slot looks the most advanced. The winger situation, by contrast, is on pause while Vinicius and Real Madrid thrash out his next move. Arsenal are ready, watching, waiting to see if the door opens even a crack.
At centre-back, the picture is far less defined. Names have been floated, momentum has not. Ezri Konsa, John Stones and Jacobo Ramon have all been linked, but none are currently viewed as realistic options. For now, that part of the plan is stuck in neutral.
Which leaves Guimarães as the most attainable piece of the puzzle.
Newcastle’s stance and a turning point
Publicly, Newcastle sources continue to push back. The message has been consistent: Guimarães is not for sale, or at least not being pushed out of the door.
Yet even on Tyneside, there is an acknowledgement that the situation is more complicated than the denials suggest. Those close to the club accept that Eddie Howe’s recent departure was influenced, in part, by the expectation that Guimarães could be sacrificed to balance the books and reshape the squad.
That admission changes the temperature around the deal. It does not mean it is done. It does mean Arsenal sense a genuine opportunity.
Timing matters now. Guimarães is due to rejoin Newcastle for pre-season this weekend. Arsenal, aware of how quickly a returning player can be reintegrated and re-committed, will not want this to drag. The longer he trains under a new regime, the harder it becomes to pull him out.
