What has infuriated Newcastle, Andrade claims, is that news of the agreement emerged before the club were ready. That prompted them to slow the process, not to renegotiate the fee, but to wrest back control of the timing and presentation of the announcement.
“Guimaraes is done, completely done. He is Arsenal’s new signing,” Andrade concluded.
Arsenal had already seen a £70m bid rejected and returned with the improved £80m offer now understood to be the basis of the agreement. Both the club and the player’s camp are described as confident the move will be completed.
Transfer request, briefings and a battle for the narrative
The situation escalated again when The Sun reported that Guimaraes had flown into Newcastle’s pre-season camp in Spain to submit a formal transfer request. That step underlined his determination to force through the switch to north London.
Luke Edwards of The Telegraph suggested that Arsenal only opened direct, club-to-club talks with Newcastle on Monday. That version of events was quickly challenged.
Fabrizio Romano pushed back, stressing that discussions between the clubs had been ongoing.
He said Newcastle and Arsenal “have been in talks for Bruno Guimaraes for some time”, with several conversations already held and the player’s agents helping to drive negotiations. According to Romano, the idea that talks only began this week does not match what he has been told.
Romano also underlined Arsenal’s stance: “Total confidence” that they will sign Guimaraes, with the deal “very close” and at “the final stages”. Personal terms have been in place for weeks, leaving the midfielder waiting for the final green light.
Newcastle already planning life after Bruno
The pressure of the deal has already forced Newcastle into planning for a future without their midfield general.
