Arsenal Nears £80m Bruno Guimaraes Signing for Title Defence

Arsenal are on the brink of landing Bruno Guimaraes in a deal that underlines exactly where the Premier League champions see themselves now: at the top, and determined to stay there.

The Gunners have agreed a package worth around £75million with Newcastle, a fee that could climb towards £80m, for the Brazil midfielder. It is the sort of money that used to belong to other clubs, other eras. Not anymore.

Guimaraes, fresh from a post-World Cup holiday and only just back with Newcastle’s squad at their pre-season camp in Spain on Monday, is expected to cut that stay short and fly to the UK for his medical. The move has accelerated quickly. Arsenal have tracked him for a long time; now they are finally within touching distance.

A four-year contract is understood to be in place, running until the summer of 2030. Guimaraes has already spoken with Mikel Arteta, who is shaping a squad designed not just to defend a title but to build a cycle.

Arteta, though, refused to be drawn on the transfer after Wednesday night’s 3-1 friendly defeat by Real Betis in Dublin. The questions came, as they always do when a major deal is close.

“I'm not going to talk about any players who aren't Arsenal players,” he said when asked how big a boost Guimaraes would be to his squad.

Pressed again on the impact a signing of that calibre could have, he kept the line tight: “Well, I can tell you at the moment that something happens and we can announce it. I will give you my straight answer.”

For now, the straight answer is this: Arsenal are arming themselves heavily.

Guimaraes will be the club’s fourth signing of the summer window. Greek winger Christos Tzolis has already arrived from Club Brugge for £34m, adding direct running and goals from wide areas. Goalkeeper Illan Meslier has joined on a free after leaving Leeds, bolstering competition in a position Arsenal refuse to treat as settled.

They have also moved decisively at the back, triggering their option to make Piero Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen permanent. The Ecuador defender’s deal is worth around £34.5m and gives Arteta another left-sided option capable of stepping into midfield or locking down the flank.

This is not tinkering. It is reinforcement worthy of champions.

And still, the ambition stretches further.

The club are ready to move if any opening appears for Vinicius Jr, Guimaraes’ Brazil team-mate and one of the game’s genuine superstars. With the forward entering the final 12 months of his contract at Real Madrid, the prospect of a move has inevitably drawn attention in north London. A successful pursuit would rank as the most audacious transfer in Arsenal’s history.

Madrid, though, are fighting hard to keep him. Crunch talks on Wednesday between the Spanish club and the player’s representatives are understood to have gone well, with the LaLiga giants and head coach Jose Mourinho increasingly confident that Vinicius will sign a lucrative new deal to stay at the Bernabeu.

So for now, Vinicius remains a dream rather than a plan. Guimaraes is the reality closing in.

Inside the Arsenal camp, players know exactly what signings of this level would mean. After the defeat to Betis, defender Riccardo Calafiori did not hide the scale of the club’s ambition.

“We are on that level now. We are on top,” the Italian said in Dublin. “We want to win the league again and we want to be even better than last season if we can. We need these kind of players, I think."

That is the context into which Guimaraes is stepping: a dressing room that has tasted the title and has no interest in giving it up.
