Angers vs Lille: New Season, New Ambitions

The first Ligue 1 fixture on Sunday throws Angers straight into deep water. Lille come to Stade Raymond Kopa with expectations of a title push, while the hosts are just hoping this campaign is about more than hanging on.

Angers survived again last season, but only just in terms of comfort. Thirteenth place, 36 points, bottom half for a second year running. Same points total, same anxieties. This third straight top-flight season has to feel different.

Club chiefs have handed that responsibility to Stephane Gilli. Sacked by Paris FC in February, he now gets his shot to prove he belongs at the top level. No long runway, no gentle easing in. Lille at home is a brutal measuring stick.

Gilli leans heavily on experience and opportunism in the market. Angers have loaded up on free transfers and loans, trying to squeeze value out of seasoned pros. Anthony Lopes and Branco van den Boomen arrive without a fee, while Usman Simbokoli is the headline signing from RWDM Brussels and Amine El Ouazzani joins on loan from Braga.

The challenge is immediate and unforgiving. Angers have not won in their last nine Ligue 1 matches. They have managed just one domestic away victory all year. They also haven’t scored in any of their last two opening Ligue 1 fixtures away from home, and have not won such a game since 2021.

There is trouble even before kick-off. Louis Mouton, struggling with a meniscus problem picked up a couple of months ago, is a doubt for matchday one.

Gilli is expected to start with:

  • Lopes; Arcus, Camara, Lefort, Ekomie; Belkhdim, van den Boomen; Sbai, Bermont, Allevinah; El Ouazzani.

Lille’s new era

On the other side of the technical area stands Davide Ancelotti, inheriting a Lille side that finished in the top three last season after a strong 2025-26 campaign. The expectations are clear: trophies, or at least a serious run at them.

He follows Bruno Genesio, who delivered back-to-back 60+ point seasons before heading to Marseille. Those are big numbers and big shoes, but Ancelotti arrives with momentum. Lille lost just once in pre-season and hit 11 goals in four friendlies. The machine looks well-oiled.

Their away form at the end of last season was outstanding. Lille went unbeaten in their final seven Ligue 1 trips, conceding only twice in that stretch. Another clean sheet on Sunday would make it four straight away league matches without letting in a goal.

History leans heavily their way too. Les Dogues have won their last four top-flight meetings with Angers without conceding. Extend that to five, and the pattern starts to look like a stranglehold.

There are problems, of course. Hamza Igamane remains sidelined with a cruciate ligament tear sustained earlier this year, a significant long-term absence.

But Lille still bring star power and narrative weight. Olivier Giroud is set to begin what he has said will likely be his final season as a professional footballer, with the World Cup winner turning 40 in September. Every appearance now carries a hint of farewell.

Ancelotti’s likely XI:

  • Ozer; Santos, Ngoy, Alexsandro, Perraud; Andre, Bouaddi; Mukau, Haraldsson, Correia; Fernandez-Pardo.

Prediction

Angers have added experience, but questions remain about their ceiling. Lille arrive with continuity, balance and a hardened away record.

Angers 0-2 Lille. A statement start for Ancelotti, and an early reality check for Gilli’s project.
