Xabi Alonso Confirms Enzo Fernandez's Future at Chelsea

Xabi Alonso has drawn a firm line in the sand over Enzo Fernandez’s future at Chelsea, insisting the midfielder is going nowhere despite growing noise around him.

Manchester City have been circling, tracking the 25-year-old Argentina international as they weigh up strengthening their midfield. But a key date has come and gone. The 14 August deadline for a formal bid passed without an offer, and Chelsea have since made their stance crystal clear to Fernandez’s camp: he is not for sale this summer.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham, Alonso cut through the speculation.

“Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he’s getting ready for Monday,”

the head coach said, underlining where his focus – and Fernandez’s – currently lies.

Alonso has been encouraged by what he has seen since the World Cup winner rejoined the squad.

“He has integrated really well since rejoining the group after the World Cup and is training really well. I see him with a really good attitude and that’s what we want,” Alonso added.

City’s interest has not gone away. They continue to monitor Fernandez as an option, but for now they are pushing against a closed door. Chelsea’s position is that the midfielder will stay at Stamford Bridge and form a central part of Alonso’s first season in charge.

The situation has been complicated by a mixed response from sections of the Chelsea support during pre-season. Fernandez has not always been universally embraced, yet the club sent a strong message of trust when they handed him the captain’s armband in the friendly win over Real Sociedad.

That decision, combined with Alonso’s public backing, points to a club trying to build around Fernandez rather than cash in on him.

The transfer window closes on 1 September, and the conversation around his future will rumble on until then. For now, though, Chelsea are acting like a team preparing not to lose a star midfielder, but to build a season around him.
