Andy Roddick Responds to Andre Agassi's Remarks on Alexander Zverev at the 2026 Laver Cup

At the 2026 Laver Cup, Team Europe secured a 13-5 victory against Team World. Alexander Zverev clinched the decisive point for his team by defeating Learner Tien in straight sets.

Andre Agassi's Comments on Zverev

Following the match, Team World captain Andre Agassi made some sharp remarks about the world number two. He acknowledged Zverev's breakthrough Grand Slam win, noting how it changed his attitude during press conferences.

"Congratulations, Sascha, on a crazy year. Seeing you win [a Grand Slam] for the first time, I know how important that was to you, and it was important to me too, because I could start listening to your press conferences again. You weren’t like, ‘Waah, why do I always lose? Why am I the third best in the world? I suck.’ But then you win, and it’s like, ‘I’m only a one-time Slam champion; I’ve got to do it again,’" Agassi said.

Andy Roddick's Take on Agassi's Critique

Former world number one Andy Roddick shared his thoughts on Agassi’s post-match speech during his podcast, Served with Andy Roddick. He pointed out Agassi’s skill in switching from teasing Zverev to delivering a heartfelt message to his team.

"Andre has an unbelievable ability to shift gears very, very quickly. He can go from kind of roasting Zverev to having a very heartfelt moment to his team. His team loves playing for him; by the way, there is no doubt about it," Roddick said.

Roddick added that Zverev typically handles criticism well. "Say what you want about Sascha, and obviously there are a million different opinions. In my experience, if you go after him, he normally receives it well. I’ve criticized him and his game, and he’ll often go, ‘yeah, that’s accurate.’"

Roddick Reflects on Zverev’s Reaction to Agassi

Roddick observed that Agassi likely understood his audience well. Since Zverev had won two majors recently, he was more receptive to jokes. The German was seen laughing with Team Europe, showing he didn’t take the roast personally.

"I think Andre knew his audience there, and obviously when you feel good, and you’ve won two majors in the last 90 days, you tend to take a joke a little better. But then you could see him shift gears from giving s— to really appreciating the time and effort that his guys put into it."

Zverev’s Upcoming Challenge: China Open

After his Laver Cup success, Zverev is set to return to ATP Tour action at the China Open in Beijing. Seeded first, he enters as a strong favorite for the title.

Projected Path to the China Open Title

  • First Round: Cameron Norrie
  • Second Round: Sebastian Baez or Juncheng Shang
  • Quarter-finals: Novak Djokovic (6th seed)
  • Semi-finals: Alex de Minaur (3rd seed)
  • Final: Felix Auger-Aliassime (2nd seed)

Zverev will face Great Britain's Cameron Norrie on Centre Court to start his campaign. If he advances, he might meet Sebastian Baez or local favorite Juncheng Shang next. The quarter-finals could pit him against Novak Djokovic, who despite dropping out of the top 10 after an early US Open exit, remains unbeaten in Beijing.

Looking further ahead, the semi-finals may bring Daniil Medvedev or Jakub Mensik, followed by a final showdown against either Alex de Minaur or Felix Auger-Aliassime. Though Zverev has reached the China Open semi-finals three times (2017, 2019, 2023), he has yet to capture this particular title.

The tournament begins Wednesday, September 30, with Zverev’s opening match scheduled on Centre Court.
