Andrea Pirlo Steps Away from Italy Head Coach Role Amid Betting Company Controversy
Andrea Pirlo has officially stepped back from consideration to become the next head coach of the Italian national team. The former Juventus and AC Milan midfielder revealed his disappointment after his potential appointment was derailed due to his commercial ties with a Russian betting company.
From Front-Runner to Out of the Running
Once seen as the leading candidate to lead the Azzurri's revival, Pirlo gained momentum after bigger names like Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti declined the job. Rumors even suggested he had agreed to a four-year contract worth €1.5 million per year. But the deal suddenly fell apart, leaving the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) searching for alternatives just when they thought they had found the right man. The push for Pirlo’s candidacy came mainly from FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini and special advisor Leonardo, both eager to bring their former AC Milan teammate on board.
The Betting Company Issue
The main obstacle was Pirlo’s role as a global ambassador for the Russian betting firm Fonbet. Italy enforces strict rules against gambling advertising and promotion, especially linked to state roles. This connection created a conflict of interest that ultimately blocked his appointment. Pirlo addressed the situation in an Instagram Story statement once he realized he was no longer being considered.
"Out of respect for the institutions, the federation, and everyone involved, I chose to remain silent until now," he said. "After learning last night that I am no longer a candidate for the Italy national team head coach position, I want to clarify a few points."
He expressed bitterness over the public debate surrounding his name and the coaching role. Throughout his career, whether playing or coaching, he insisted he always respected local laws and contracts. The collaboration in question arose during his time working in the United Arab Emirates and was purely commercial and sporting.
No Political Intentions Behind Business Ties
Pirlo, a 2006 World Cup winner, denied any political meaning behind his partnership. He criticized attempts to politicize it.
"Attributing political meaning to this collaboration means attributing convictions to me that I have never expressed and do not hold," he explained. "It is regrettable that a decision based on sporting grounds quickly became a public debate assigning motives to me that never existed. My love for Italy does not depend on a job."
Future of the Azzurri Coaching Search
This sudden collapse puts Maldini and the FIGC in a tough spot. They had planned an internal meeting expected to finalize Pirlo’s appointment, but now they must restart their search with the UEFA Nations League approaching.
Despite his disappointment, Pirlo maintained goodwill towards the federation’s leadership.
"I want to thank Maldini and Leonardo for the respect and faith they showed me," he said. "I know their competence, seriousness, and the love they always dedicate to Italian football."
