Carlo Ancelotti Drops Liverpool Star as Brazil Unveils Youth-Focused Squad for Friendlies

Ancelotti Shakes Up Brazil Squad Ahead of Friendlies

Carlo Ancelotti has announced a fresh Brazil lineup for upcoming friendlies against Australia and India, sidelining several well-known players. Among those omitted is Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, as the coach shifts focus towards younger talent with an eye on the 2030 World Cup.

Youth Takes Priority Over Experience

Following a disappointing World Cup where Brazil exited in the round of 16 to Norway, Ancelotti has started a sweeping rebuild. His new squad features mainly young players eligible for the 2028 Olympic Games, signaling a long-term vision for the national team.

Along with Alisson, veteran midfielders Casemiro and Fabinho were left out. Neymar is also absent, having recently retired from international duty. This overhaul matches Ancelotti's promise after Brazil's early World Cup exit.

The Impact of World Cup Disappointment

"The World Cup was a disappointment for us and for me personally," Ancelotti told ESPN. "The pain of the defeat lingers much longer. Now, however, we are motivated by the fact that we have time to prepare for a new cycle and get ready for the upcoming competitions."

On dropping Alisson, he explained, "We know Alisson very well, and when competitions like the Copa America come, if he remains the best goalkeeper in Brazil, Alisson will play. Right now, however, we have to prioritise the younger ones."

Experienced Players Stay to Guide the Next Generation

Despite the purge of older stars, some seasoned players remain to lead the squad. Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior and Barcelona's Raphinha will spearhead the attack alongside Chelsea's Joao Pedro, returning after missing the World Cup. Defensive leadership comes from Paris Saint-Germain's Marquinhos and new Arsenal signing Bruno Guimaraes.

"I chose these players to help with this change in direction," Ancelotti said. "They are crucial for the future and will help the younger players improve. One thing is certain: a player who is 34 or 35 years old isn’t the future; they are the present. If a player of that age is ready to play in a major tournament, they will be in the national squad."

Historic Friendlies and New Challenges

The revamped Brazil squad will first travel to Australia for two friendlies: facing the Socceroos in Townsville on September 25, then in Brisbane four days later. Following that, Brazil will make their debut match in India on October 3 in Kolkata — a landmark event for the five-time world champions, playing in front of millions of passionate fans there for the first time.
