Alex Scott Boosts Manchester United's Midfield Plans
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has been given fresh encouragement, and it comes from the south coast. Alex Scott has rejected a new contract offer from Bournemouth, sharpening the focus at Old Trafford on a player they have been tracking closely.
The 22-year-old, tied to the Cherries until 2028, has so far resisted attempts to extend his deal, with his camp turning down the latest proposal, according to Sky Sports. Bournemouth have pushed to protect their asset; Scott, for now, has pushed back.
For United, the timing is ideal. Michael Carrick has already overseen the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, but he wants a third midfielder to complete a reshaped engine room. Scott is one of the names firmly on the list, with AS Roma’s Manu Kone another serious option.
Arsenal have been linked with both players, yet their gaze is fixed elsewhere. Bruno Guimaraes remains the Gunners’ priority in midfield, a stance that could leave United with a largely uncontested run at Scott or Kone, especially given both clubs’ willingness to sanction sales in the right circumstances.
Bournemouth, for their part, know the market. Scott is expected to command a fee in the region of £60 million. In a summer when Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Morgan Rogers have all been involved in triple-figure deals, that price looks almost restrained for a young, Premier League-proven midfielder with room to grow.
There have been suggestions of a release clause forming part of the proposed new contract, but with nothing signed, Bournemouth remain in a strong yet vulnerable position: long-term deal in place, but a player not yet convinced.
Chelsea hover in the background. They are already bringing in Morgan Rogers and retain an interest in Scott, with Enzo Fernandez’s future once again under scrutiny after his standout World Cup raised expectations and pressure in equal measure. Scott is not the only midfielder on the radar of Europe’s elite, yet his situation feels more fluid than most.
Kone’s profile has been enhanced on the international stage. The Frenchman made four starts at the World Cup, often keeping former United target Aurelien Tchouameni out of the XI. Tchouameni, however, is now expected to sign a new contract at Real Madrid, a move that effectively shuts one door for United while nudging them back toward their current shortlist.
Even within Bournemouth’s dressing room, United’s scouts have not stopped at one name. Tyler Adams has also been linked with a switch to Old Trafford, although interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba has cooled, suggesting the club’s recruitment team has narrowed its midfield focus.
The picture is broader than the middle of the pitch. United are also weighing up attacking reinforcements, with Crysencio Summerville and Iliman Ndiaye both under consideration. Any decisive move, though, is on pause while the club resolves Marcus Rashford’s future.
Rashford, now 28, is set to be reintegrated into the squad after loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona. He had pushed for a permanent move to Barça, but that avenue has all but closed with Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi arriving there this summer. His return adds another layer of complexity to United’s attacking plans and budget.
On the pitch, United’s preparations are already underway. A strong side suffered defeat to Wrexham last week, a result that underlined how much work still lies ahead for Carrick’s new-look group. Next comes Norwegian outfit Rosenborg, before glamour friendlies against Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain test the squad’s resilience and depth.
By then, the Scott situation could look very different. A rejected contract, a defined price, and a manager in need of one more midfielder: the pieces are on the table. The question now is whether United move first, or watch someone else seize the chance they have been quietly building towards.
