Al-Hilal Shifts Focus to Summerville After Raphinha Deal Fails

Al-Hilal did not just change targets this summer. They changed tone.

What began as a blockbuster move for Raphinha has ended with the Saudi champions throwing their weight – and their money – behind Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville, after a bruising exchange with Barcelona shattered trust between the clubs.

From Raphinha Dream to Broken Trust

Saudi media figure Mohammed Al-Bukairy laid out the story on his account on X. Al-Hilal, he revealed, opened negotiations with a formal offer of €80 million for Raphinha. The plan was bold and cleverly structured: the deal would also help settle the situation of Joao Cancelo, on loan at Barcelona, with a €20 million discount built into the overall package.

Then came the response from Spain.

According to Al-Bukairy, Barcelona president Joan Laporta pushed back hard. The Catalan club did not just hesitate over the €80 million proposal; Laporta went in the opposite direction, seeking to raise the deal to €100 million.

That demand detonated the mood.

Inside Al-Hilal, club management viewed the escalation as a kind of financial “blackmail”, a figure that, in their eyes, did not match the technical value on the table. The reaction was swift. The “decision-makers at the club,” as Al-Bukairy described them, closed the Raphinha file on the spot and ordered a rapid hunt for a world-class alternative of the same calibre.

Summerville Emerges From the Shadows

With negotiations with Barcelona stalling, a new name pushed to the front of the discussion: Crysencio Summerville.

Al-Bukairy detailed how the Dutchman, then starring for West Ham United, was not even among the primary targets at the start of the window. The money had been lined up for other profiles – Raphinha most of all, or even Mason Greenwood, who would later head to Fenerbahce.

But the market moves fast. Al-Hilal moved faster.

The club’s ability to make decisions at speed, backed by what Al-Bukairy called precise sporting intelligence on the movements of European rivals, dragged the spotlight away from Barcelona and firmly onto London.

A trusted source then delivered a crucial warning: Roma were closing in. Summerville, that source told Al-Hilal, was on the verge of joining the Italian club for around €50 million.

This was the trigger.

Al-Hilal’s hierarchy reacted aggressively, “moving forcefully to cut off the path” for the club from the Italian capital. The Saudi giants came in with a lavish €80 million bid – a full €30 million above Roma’s offer.

The impact was immediate. West Ham accepted without hesitation. According to Al-Bukairy, the final procedures and initial signatures took less than an hour to complete. Just like that, the “luxurious Dutch winger” was Al-Hilal’s.

A World Cup Breakout Fuels a Mega Move

Such a financial leap did not come out of nowhere. Al-Hilal had been tracking Summerville closely, particularly his rise with the Netherlands national team.

At the 2026 World Cup, the 24-year-old announced himself to the wider world. He became one of the surprise packages of the tournament, contributing to five goals in six matches and forcing his way onto the wishlists of Europe’s biggest clubs.

That first major international showcase changed his status. No longer just a promising winger, he looked like a star accelerating towards his peak.

His club numbers backed that up. Before his move to the Zaeem, Summerville had already delivered a standout season with Leeds United in 2023–2024: 21 goals, 10 assists and the Player of the Season award in the English Championship.

Those figures told the story of a player climbing fast, not one plateauing.

Inzaghi Gets His Winger

For Simone Inzaghi, the fit could hardly be better.

Summerville’s ability to operate on both flanks gives Al-Hilal’s coach exactly what he wanted: versatility, pace, and end product in the final third. His profile aligns with a clear internal plan – to refresh the squad with younger players hungry for titles, both domestically and across the continent.

Al-Hilal walked away from a fraught negotiation in Barcelona and turned instead to a winger whose value is rising with every season. The question now is not why they changed course, but how far this new Dutch arrival can take the Saudi champions in the battles that lie ahead.
