Ring’s Late Goal Completes Stunning Aghinagh Fightback

Under the lights at Sam Maguire Park, Aghinagh spent 48 minutes chasing shadows and scores. They finished the night chasing a cup instead.

A late, nerveless finish from substitute Luke Ring sealed a remarkable turnaround as the Rusheen club ripped up a seven-point half-time deficit to claim the McCarthy Insurance Group FL Division 6 title, edging out Kilmacabea by four.

At the break, this looked done. Kilmacabea led 0-11 to 0-4, were sharper, more ruthless, and playing as if the trophy already had their name on it. Aghinagh, by contrast, were hanging on to the game by the fingertips of one man: Liam Twohig.

The corner-forward hit all four of Aghinagh’s first-half points, twice slaloming through after quickly-taken frees, but his side struggled badly to punch holes in a disciplined Kilmacabea full-back line. Colin McCarthy, commanding his goal and punishing from distance, landed three booming frees to stretch the gap.

Kilmacabea almost landed a hammer blow inside the opening minute. Liam McCarthy’s effort was blocked by John Lynch, John Keating pounced on the rebound, and his shot thundered back off the crossbar. Even without that early goal and without captain Ian Jennings, the Leap men settled into a rhythm Aghinagh couldn’t match.

When Aghinagh finally did threaten a green flag on 21 minutes, McCarthy shut the door, denying Con Buckley at a crucial stage with the score at 0-4 to 0-3. Kilmacabea took that let-off as a cue to accelerate.

Damien Gore, kept on a tight leash by Aghinagh captain Donagh O’Riordan for long stretches, burst briefly into life before the interval, raising first an orange flag and then a white in quick succession. Hardworking midfielder Cillian Whelton then drove over a long-range point on the whistle to make it a seven-point game and leave Aghinagh staring at a long road back.

They took it.

Aghinagh emerged after the restart with a different energy and a different edge. Luke O’Leary drove at Kilmacabea, carrying ball and belief, and the scoreboard finally began to move their way. The gap narrowed, the tackles bit harder, and the once-composed Kilmacabea back line suddenly had questions to answer.

The real shift came through Buckley. Stationed at centre-forward, he began to dictate the contest, clipping over a trio of two-point scores that dragged his team from desperation into genuine contention. Each one landed like a jab, softening Kilmacabea up for the finish.

Gore briefly checked the surge with a point that nudged Kilmacabea 0-14 to 0-10 ahead in the 48th minute. It would be their last score of the night.

The pressure finally told. Buckley tacked on more to bring his personal haul to six and trim the deficit to two. Then came another blow for Kilmacabea: corner-back Dara Tobin, excellent up to then, was forced off injured. The hole he left behind proved fatal.

Sensing weakness, Aghinagh poured through the heart of the Kilmacabea cover. Midfield pairing Declan Ambrose and Thomas Morgans linked superbly, working the ball with purpose to Twohig, who had drifted into a pocket of space. One more sharp exchange, and it broke to Ring.

Moments earlier he had gone close. This time, in clear air and with the game tilting, he buried it. Aghinagh led for the first time.

Kilmacabea still had time, but not the composure. Aghinagh’s defence, marshalled by O’Riordan and anchored by Lynch, closed ranks and refused to yield a clear sight at goal. When Kilmacabea did earn a free, dissent cost them dear as it was marched forward; Twohig, ice-cool, split the posts.

He wasn’t finished. Deep into injury time, substitute Aodh Twomey burst forward on a late break and drew a foul. Twohig stepped up again, nailed his eighth point, and with it sent the Division 6 trophy to Muskerry.

From 0-11 to 0-4 down and outplayed, Aghinagh had turned the game on its head. On a night that began with Kilmacabea rattling the crossbar and dictating every rhythm, it ended with Aghinagh dictating something far more important: where the silverware was going.
