2026 World Cup Schedule, Results, and Group Standings

2026 World Cup Groups and Knockout Hopes

The 2026 World Cup has kicked off with a new format featuring 48 teams divided into 12 groups. Co-host nations Mexico, USA, and Canada lead Groups A, B, and D respectively. Meanwhile, Scotland face a tough challenge in Group C alongside Brazil, Morocco, and Haiti. England finds itself in Group L with Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. The top two teams from each group will advance to the first-ever round of 32 in World Cup history. Additionally, the eight best third-placed teams will join them, meaning even three points might secure a spot in the knockout rounds for some.

Expanded Tournament and Key Venues

The tournament features 104 matches, which is 40 more than the previous World Cup in Qatar 2022. This edition may mark the final World Cup appearances for legendary players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The opening match took place at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium, a site famous for Diego Maradona's iconic goals against England in 1986. This stadium also hosted memorable finals: Brazil’s 4-1 triumph over Italy in 1970, highlighted by Carlos Alberto’s classic team goal, and Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 win against West Germany in 1986, secured by Jorge Burruchaga’s late goal.

Mexico and Canada will each host 13 games, while the United States will hold 78 matches. Starting from the quarter-finals, all games will be played in the US, culminating in the final at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.

Who Will Take the Trophy?

The question on everyone’s mind is which nation will claim the title? There are strong contenders among England’s promising new generation, the reigning champions Argentina, France with their deep squad, and an emerging young Spain side. The debate is wide open and the excitement is building as the tournament progresses.
