2026 Ballon d'Or Nominees: Announcement Date and Ceremony Details

The 70th edition of the Ballon d'Or is set to crown the best player from the 2025/26 season this October. This award remains soccer's most prestigious individual honor. Last year’s champion, Rodri, who helped Spain secure the World Cup this summer, might be in contention again.

Shortlist Reveal

France Football will reveal the nominees for both men’s and women’s awards on Tuesday, September 8, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. CET. A shortlist of 30 players will be published, from which the ultimate winner will emerge at the gala.

When and Where Is the Ballon d'Or Ceremony?

The ceremony will take place on Monday, October 26. Unlike previous years typically hosted in Paris, this 70th anniversary event will be held in London, England, as a tribute to the first-ever winner, Sir Stanley Matthews.

How Are Winners Selected?

  • Men’s Ballon d'Or: A panel of international journalists organized by France Football compiles the 30 finalists.
  • Yashin Award (Best Goalkeeper): Shortlist chosen by the same journalist panel.
  • Women’s Ballon d'Or: Selected by 50 international women’s soccer journalists.
  • Kopa Trophy (Under-21 Players): A group of 32 former Ballon d'Or winners nominate 10 finalists.

The reduction in jurors aims to sharpen focus on individual merit and deserving winners. Despite that, debates continue, especially after Madrid's reactions to Rodri's win and Messi’s contested victory in 2023.
