Zechiël Grateful for Feyenoord Stay After Lille Move Collapse

At the end of August, Gjivai Zechiël stood on the brink of a major move. Lille OSC pushed hard, Feyenoord held firm, and the 22-year-old midfielder suddenly found himself at the centre of one of the late-summer transfer battles.

The French club did not come window-shopping. Several bids went in, with the final offer reportedly climbing to around €17 million including bonuses. Serious money. Serious intent.

“That was pretty serious,” Zechiël admits in an interview with Voetbal International. “At that moment, it seemed better for me from a sporting point of view. But looking back, I am grateful and happy that I am here, because I am simply doing well here.”

The story could easily have gone the other way. A young midfielder, a top-five league, a club with a track record of developing talent. On paper, the path looked obvious.

Zechiël now sees it differently.

“I feel at home here, and I am grateful to be out on the pitch here. I am happy that I get to play for this club,” he says. “In the end, you grow into the team, you start to understand your role in the team, but also the staff you are dealing with. That is, of course, also an important part of it. The staff and our style of play suit me very well.”

Feyenoord shut the door – and then opened another

Inside De Kuip, the message was clear: Zechiël was not for sale. Feyenoord’s hierarchy viewed him as a key figure for the present and the near future, and were determined to keep him in Rotterdam if at all possible.

When the Lille move finally collapsed, Feyenoord didn’t wait around. At the start of September, ESPN reporter Sinclair Bischop revealed that the club had reached a verbal agreement with Zechiël over a contract extension. His current deal already runs until mid-2028, but the intention is to tighten that bond even further.

“If everything goes well, that should be possible,” the right-footed midfielder says of the new agreement. No big declarations, no drama – just a quiet confirmation that both sides want the same thing.

Form to match the faith

On the pitch, Zechiël is backing up all that faith with numbers. He has opened the new season in outstanding form: four goals and three assists in Feyenoord’s first six competitive matches.

It is the kind of output that explains why Lille were willing to push to €17 million. It is also the kind of form that makes Feyenoord’s refusal to sell look less like resistance and more like a statement.

For now, the move to France is off the table. The midfielder who almost left is thriving where he is, embedded in a team and a style that fit him, playing for a club that made it very clear how much they wanted him to stay.

If this is how he responds to a collapsed transfer, the real question is not why Lille came calling — it’s who will be next, and how long Feyenoord can keep the door shut.
