Sandro Tonali's Agent Reveals Midfielder's Sadness After Unexpected AC Milan Exit and Transfer Insights
Sandro Tonali's move from AC Milan to Newcastle United left many surprised, and his agent, Beppe Riso, has opened up about the emotional challenges the midfielder faced during this transition. The Italian star found adapting to life in England difficult at first, showing sadness in his early days with the Magpies.
Challenges in the Premier League
Growing up a Milan supporter and playing a vital role in their Serie A triumph, Tonali hesitated when Newcastle offered €67 million in summer 2023. His agent shared that the initial weeks after the transfer were tough, with Tonali feeling down as he adjusted to a new environment far from home.
Reasons Behind Leaving AC Milan
Beppe Riso explained that the move was driven by changes in Milan’s atmosphere and identity. He described how the club felt different from the historic one Tonali had known. On the Colpi da Maestro podcast, Riso said,
"We took the first step because we realised Milan was becoming different. I know Milan well, and it wasn't giving the same feelings as the historic club. Talking to Sandro, we saw the Premier League as an exciting challenge. He had the courage to go since he was a key player in the Scudetto-winning team, but he’s a visionary."
Adjusting and Proving Himself
Tonali’s history shows he often needs time to settle, as seen during his first year at Milan after moving from Brescia. Despite his sadness at Newcastle, he eventually adapted and made an impact on the pitch. Riso mentioned,
"It was very hard for him initially; he was sad in those first weeks, but he got a grip and showed his quality as always."
Record-Breaking Move to Tottenham Hotspur
After proving himself at Newcastle, Tonali secured a major transfer three years later, joining Tottenham Hotspur for a huge €108 million. Riso acknowledged the intense pressure involved with such a big switch, calling it a "crazy move" both financially and responsibility-wise. Still, he believes Tonali is now exactly where he belongs, having embraced his Premier League journey despite the rocky start.
