Zamalek Grinds Past Abu Qir to Reclaim Top Spot
Zamalek did not dazzle. They did something more important on a tense Cairo night: they won, and they went top.
The defending Egyptian Premier League champions edged newly promoted Abu Qir Fertilizers 2-0 at Cairo Stadium on Tuesday, a scoreline that flatters them more than the performance. Abu Qir saw more of the ball, took more shots, and forced the champions to suffer for long spells. Zamalek, though, carried the ruthless edge that separates title contenders from hopefuls.
Ismail’s rocket settles early nerves
The hosts struck first with a moment of pure violence from Mohamed Ismail in the 17th minute.
Mahmoud Abdel Rahim "Genesh" had raced out to challenge Mahmoud Bentayg, leaving his goal gaping. The loose ball dropped kindly, and Ismail did not hesitate. He met it with a thunderous volley, a rocket into the unguarded net that ripped through the early tension and gave Zamalek the lead.
That should have settled them. It did not.
Abu Qir, unfazed by the occasion, grew into the game. They finished with 53% possession and 13 attempts to Zamalek’s 8, numbers that underline how often they pushed the champions back. Zamalek’s back line, so often in control domestically, found themselves scrambling, blocking, and clearing as the visitors chased an equaliser.
A goal-line rescue at 1-0
The turning point came deep in the second half.
With 69 minutes gone, Abu Qir finally carved Zamalek open. Omar Gaber swung in a dangerous cross, and Oday Dabbagh attacked it, steering the ball towards goal. Cairo Stadium held its breath. Genesh was beaten.
Then Mohamed Debash arrived.
The defender read it, raced back, and hooked the ball off the line with a desperate, brilliant clearance. It was the kind of intervention that never shows on the scoresheet but often decides titles. At 1-1, with the momentum against them, Zamalek would have faced a very different final 20 minutes.
Instead, they survived. And then they punished.
Sherif kills the contest late
As Abu Qir pushed higher, gaps began to appear. Zamalek, who had spent much of the night under pressure, finally found the space to breathe.
Three minutes from the end of normal time, substitute Ahmed Sherif drifted into the penalty area unmarked. One clever run, one calm touch, one ruthless finish. He lifted the ball over the advancing Genesh and into the net to seal the result at 2-0.
The scoreline looked comfortable. The match was anything but.
Champions’ grind, newcomers’ warning
The victory takes Zamalek to 10 points and provisionally to the top of the table after four rounds, one point clear of Pyramids, Al-Ahly and Ceramica Cleopatra. Both Pyramids and Al-Ahly, though, have played only three matches. The margin is slim. The pressure is not.
This was Zamalek’s third win of the campaign, adding Abu Qir to a list that already includes Al-Bank Al-Ahly and Suez Petrojet. The only blemish remains the opening-day draw with Al-Ittihad Al-Sakandary, a reminder that the champions are still searching for full fluency.
Abu Qir Fertilizers, on the other hand, leave with nothing on the night but plenty of credit. They stay stuck on 3 points in 15th place after a third straight defeat, yet their performance in Cairo will not go unnoticed. They pressed, they created, they scared the champions. On another evening, Dabbagh’s chance crosses the line instead of being hooked away from it.
Tough schedule, bigger tests
For Zamalek, the calendar offers no time to relax. They travel to face Ghazl El Mahalla on 16 September in the fifth round, another tricky domestic assignment in a league where dropped points quickly pile up.
Before that, the focus turns to Africa. On Saturday, they meet Djibouti’s Port in the second leg of the African Champions League preliminary round, carrying domestic momentum into continental duty.
They are top for now. The question is whether nights like this — grinding, nervous, decided by a volley, a clearance, and a late chip — are a warning sign, or the early marks of a champion learning once again how to suffer and still stay ahead.
