Wrexham Ready for Championship Clash Against Swansea City

Phil Parkinson says Wrexham will walk into Swansea City on Saturday night as a very different Championship animal to the one that left south Wales bruised last season.

The Red Dragons were edged out 2-1 by Mitor Matos’ side in December, a defeat that stung but did not derail them. They regrouped, surged through the second half of the campaign and finished seventh in 2025-26 – their highest placing in the second tier.

Now the backdrop is even tougher. Swansea sit top of the Championship, 10 points from a possible 12 and setting the early pace. The Liberty Stadium will be expectant. The leaders are in stride.

Yet Parkinson sees something else: evidence his team have grown into the division.

The clearest marker, in his eyes, came in midweek. Wrexham went to Millwall and dismantled them 3-0, a result that did more than add three points. It underlined a shift.

Asked whether his side are better equipped than on that last trip to Swansea, Parkinson did not hesitate.

“Absolutely,” he said. “The Millwall game is a good example of that, where we won 2-0 down there last year and we beat them 3-0 this year.

“But they were very different games in terms of the control we had in the game this time around.

“We looked to a more accomplished Championship side this time around. The players have got used to the level and of course we've added quality into the group.”

That word – accomplished – is doing a lot of work for Wrexham now. The raw edge that carried them up the leagues has been tempered by a side learning when to press, when to sit, when to suffocate a game rather than simply chase it.

Swansea away will test all of that. Top versus a team intent on proving it truly belongs among the contenders.
