Wrexham AFC vs Burnley: A Test of Momentum at STōK Cae Ras

Wrexham AFC step back under the lights at the STōK Cae Ras tonight with something they have not had much of in the early weeks of the season: momentum.

Phil Parkinson’s side emerged from a daunting double-header on the road with four points, a 3-0 dismantling of Millwall followed by a disciplined 0-0 draw at Swansea City. Two clean sheets, two very different performances, and suddenly a slow, winless start to life in the Championship has a platform.

Now comes a very different kind of test: bottom-of-the-table, winless Burnley, live on Sky Sports Plus at 7.45pm.

Wrexham’s new-look spine takes shape

The international break and deadline day reshaped Parkinson’s options, and tonight could be the first real glimpse of what this revamped Wrexham might look like at home.

Joe Worrall, signed on deadline day and formerly of Burnley, is in line to face his old club in North Wales. The defender adds experience and presence to a back line that suddenly looks far more assured after those back-to-back shutouts.

Callum O’Hare, another late arrival, is pushing to start again, offering guile and energy between the lines. Parkinson is expected to keep faith with the 3-4-2-1 system that has underpinned the upturn, with the shape giving Wrexham a solid base and clear attacking lanes.

The front end of that structure could see changes. Kieffer Moore, Josh Windass and Jacques Ekomié all began on the bench at Swansea but are pressing hard to return to the starting XI. Moore’s aerial power, Windass’ movement and Ekomié’s direct running give Wrexham very different ways to hurt a stretched Burnley squad.

Out wide, wing-backs Danny Imray and Ekomié, if selected, will be key. Their job is simple and brutal: pin Burnley back, stretch the pitch, and drag tired legs into uncomfortable areas.

Liberato Cacace remains sidelined, while Ben Sheaf and Nathan Broadhead are edging closer but still need late fitness checks before any involvement. Parkinson has more depth than he did a fortnight ago, but he still has to juggle minutes carefully.

Burnley arrive bruised and under scrutiny

Burnley come to North Wales with the weight of expectation heavy on their shoulders. Relegated from the Premier League last season, they sit bottom of the Championship with just two points from five games. The slide has been sharp, and patience is already thinning.

Under Nicky Hayen, they are still searching for rhythm, results and a sense of identity. The response from the board has been decisive: bring in goals, bring in experience, bring in Jamie Vardy.

The 39-year-old former Leicester City striker has signed on a free transfer until the end of the season. His name alone changes the temperature around the club. Vardy has not played competitive football for a while, so he is more likely to start on the bench, but his potential debut tonight adds a layer of intrigue. At one stage, he was briefly linked with a move to North Wales; now he could be the man trying to silence the STōK Cae Ras instead.

Burnley’s problems do not stop at form. Their injury list is long and unforgiving. Denis Satpaev is expected to be out for a few weeks, while Bashir Humphreys, Jordan Beyer, Jaydon Banel, Enock Agyei, Josh Cullen and Ashley Barnes are all unavailable. Lucas Pires could return after completing concussion protocol, a rare sliver of good news in a bleak early-season picture.

Those absences tilt the odds towards Wrexham. On paper, at least. Parkinson will not need reminding that even a wounded Burnley squad still carries Championship quality and enough individual talent to punish any lapse.

A night that could shift the mood

For Wrexham, the stakes are clear. Victory would stretch their unbeaten run to four matches and send a message that their early-season wobble was a stumble, not a trend. It would also feed the growing sense that this newly assembled squad is starting to find its feet at this level.

The script almost writes itself: a packed STōK Cae Ras, a resurgent home side, and a fallen Premier League club desperate to stop the bleeding, possibly with Vardy waiting to spring from the bench.

Prediction: Wrexham AFC 2-1 Burnley.

If Parkinson’s men match the steel they showed at Millwall with the control they found at Swansea, tonight could be the night they truly announce themselves to the Championship.
