Will England Dismiss Thomas Tuchel After World Cup Semifinal Defeat to Argentina?

England came within moments of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966 but ultimately fell short in a 2-1 loss to defending champions Argentina. Leading 1-0 after 84 minutes, the Three Lions conceded two late goals, both set up by Lionel Messi. The defeat left fans frustrated, with many pointing fingers at manager Thomas Tuchel for tactical missteps that may have cost the team dearly.

Is Tuchel’s Job at Risk?

There has been widespread disappointment among England supporters following the semifinal, but the Football Association has not signaled any intention to dismiss Tuchel. The manager, who is overseeing his first World Cup campaign with England, acknowledged the team's shortcomings after the match.

“We got too passive after we scored and conceded a lot of chances. We could not turn ball possession around and conceded so many crosses and shots,” Tuchel said in a BBC interview. “We couldn't keep the level up after we scored. We couldn't get out. Of course we wanted to go for the second goal. It was not a structural problem, we changed nothing after the goal.”

According to Daily Mail’s chief sports reporter Mike Keegan, Tuchel maintains full support from FA chief executive Mark Bullingham and will remain England's manager through the 2028 European Championship.

England’s Struggles Throughout the Tournament

Despite high expectations, England's performances were uneven. The team opened with a 4-2 win over Croatia but followed that with a goalless draw against Ghana. Their final group game saw a 2-0 victory over Panama, though the first goal came only after the 60th minute.

In the knockout stages, England barely edged past debutants DR Congo, trailing for most of the game before clinching a late win. Against Norway in the quarterfinals, they briefly trailed before two goals from Jude Bellingham turned the tide.

Controversial Tactical Choices Against Argentina

Tuchel’s substitutions during the semifinal sparked debate. His first defensive change came in the 72nd minute, late into the match. Following Enzo Fernandez’s equalizer, England switched to a five-defender formation. Fans questioned whether this move was timely or too delayed, and it was widely criticized.

“I did also offensive substitutions in the last games, we just tried to help the players,” Tuchel explained on Fox Sports. “We conceded [a chance] straight away and we decided to go to a back five because the gaps were far too open.”

Tuchel’s Overall Record with England

Since taking charge in December 2024, Tuchel has overseen 21 matches with the following results:

His last defeat before Argentina came on March 31, 2026, a narrow 1-0 loss. Despite recent setbacks, Tuchel's record shows more wins than losses.
