Manchester United Reject Galatasaray’s Audacious Move for Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United have no intention of letting their captain go, no matter how bold the offer.

Galatasaray have made what has been described as an “audacious approach” for Bruno Fernandes, but United are set to knock it back immediately, according to The Independent. The Turkish champions are understood to be putting together a sizeable financial package in an effort to tempt the Portuguese playmaker to Istanbul.

United’s response is simple: he is not for sale.

Release clause on the table – but not for English clubs

Fernandes, now 31, is heading into the final 12 months of the three‑year contract he signed in 2024, though United hold an option to extend it by a further season. Built into that deal is a £56million release clause, but it can only be activated by clubs outside England.

That detail naturally opens the door for ambitious clubs on the continent, and Galatasaray have long had Fernandes on their radar. Back in May, The Mirror described the United captain as a “dream target” for the Istanbul side, who have shown in recent windows that they are not shy about going big. The arrivals of Victor Osimhen and Leroy Sane underlined their intent to shop at the very top of the market.

Even so, United are planning their season with Fernandes at the heart of it. The Old Trafford hierarchy have fought off interest in their captain before, and their stance has not shifted as the window ticks towards its conclusion.

Carrick counting on his captain

With the summer window entering its final weeks and the Premier League season kicking off on Friday, United are drawing a clear line: Fernandes will not be allowed to leave.

Michael Carrick views the midfielder as a central pillar of his project. Fernandes is expected to play a major role not only domestically but also in United’s return to the Champions League. After finishing third in the Premier League last season – their best finish since 2022/23 – United head into 2026/27 with momentum and a sense that they are edging back towards the elite.

Their Champions League comeback, the first since 2024, adds another layer of importance to keeping their captain. This is not the summer to lose their main creative force.

Contract talks can wait – for now

At this stage, there are no active plans to hand Fernandes a new contract before the campaign begins. That position may evolve once the season is underway, especially if his influence remains as strong as Carrick expects.

For his part, Fernandes has spoken like a man who still sees his future in Manchester, at least in the short term.

“Playing for Manchester United is always a special moment for everyone. At the same time, it brings a lot of responsibility with it,” he said last month. “But I don't think anyone comes to Manchester United thinking that we won't have the responsibility to win again, to be at the top of the Premier League, at the top of European football, because the club's history brings that responsibility.

“Regardless of the most recent years, they were not at the level that the club was used to. I think everyone always believes that we can be the ones who are going to do this, the ones who are going to turn the page, the ones who are going to make it possible for United to fight on all fronts. And I think that has to be special for us players, to realise that we can be the main, let's say, protagonists of this change of history for United to win again.”

Those are not the words of a captain with one foot out of the door.

United open their Premier League campaign away to Hull City on Saturday, August 22, at 12:30pm. Galatasaray may test their resolve before the window shuts, but all the signals from Old Trafford point one way: Fernandes will be leading them out when the season starts.
