Watford Captain Calls for Unity Amid Winless Streak

Watford captain Mattie Pollock has called for unity as the club’s winless run stretched to five games and the early-season optimism around Vicarage Road began to fray.

The Hornets slipped to 18th in the fledgling Championship table after Saturday’s tight defeat at West Brom, another afternoon where effort outstripped end product and the points went missing.

Now comes a defining week.

Preston visit Vicarage Road on Tuesday night, with Stoke City to follow on Saturday. Two home games. Two chances to steady the mood and stop the slide.

“They're two massive games,” Pollock told BBC Three Counties Radio, laying it out plainly. “We've come up short in the last two away games, so we've got to make sure we put things right in front of our crowd and get the fans with us.”

It all started so differently. Watford opened the 2026-27 campaign by beating Southampton, a statement win that hinted at a side ready to push at the right end of the table under Alessio Dionisi.

Since then, the momentum has drained away. Two draws and two defeats from their next four league fixtures have dragged Watford down the standings and tightened the pressure on a squad still learning its manager’s demands.

Cup competition brought no respite. A heavily rotated team was thrashed 5-1 by Peterborough in the EFL Cup last month, a bruising night that exposed the lack of depth and sharpened the scrutiny.

Pollock, handed the armband in July, isn’t hiding from any of it. Responsibility sits squarely on his shoulders, and he knows it.

“I'll do everything in my power to make sure the lads stick together,” he said, underlining the message that the dressing room cannot splinter now. “We came up short at the weekend, but if we can start scoring goals and winning games, then it can still be an exciting season.”

That is the challenge: turn defiance into points, and frustration into goals.

The table may still be “formative”, but the mood around a club can harden quickly. With Preston and Stoke coming to town, Watford’s captain has drawn the line. Now his team have to show whether this is just an early stumble, or the shape of their season.
