Virgil van Dijk's Firm Stance on Gakpo's Future at Liverpool
Virgil van Dijk has no interest in playing diplomat. On the subject of Cody Gakpo to Manchester City, the Liverpool captain made his stance brutally clear.
Asked after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham whether he wanted his compatriot to stay, Van Dijk fired back: “What do you think? He's a top-class player. I think we should keep our quality players.”
That line said everything. City are in active talks over a move for Gakpo, valued at around £80 million, with The Athletic reporting that the Premier League champions have become the forward’s preferred destination after Tottenham Hotspur also showed interest. The clock is ticking on the window. The tension around Anfield is rising with it.
Van Dijk draws a line on Gakpo
Liverpool’s position is firm for now. Bradley Barcola is undergoing a medical ahead of his move from Paris Saint-Germain, but even with the France international on the way, the club will not sanction Gakpo’s exit in the next 48 hours unless another winger is secured first.
Van Dijk knows exactly what losing Gakpo at this stage would mean. Not just another name off the teamsheet. A blow to a squad already navigating what he openly calls a “transitional phase”.
“We'll see what the next few days bring,” he said. “I want him to stay not just because he's a top-class player, but also because he's a friend of mine. He's very important to us.”

Barcola as a statement
While Gakpo’s future hangs over the club, Barcola’s impending arrival has given Van Dijk a different kind of talking point – proof, in his eyes, that Liverpool can still compete for elite talent.
“He's a good player, and he has pace,” Van Dijk said. “I remember a goal he scored against Chelsea in the Champions League last season. If he comes here, he'll be welcomed with open arms.”
That memory wasn’t accidental. Van Dijk chose a Champions League moment to underline the level of player Liverpool believe they are bringing in. It also fed into a wider message he was keen to hammer home.
“I don't think there's any doubt that a club like Liverpool is a very attractive destination for very good players. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We all know we're going through something of a transitional phase. Either you want to be part of it or you don't.”
The challenge was laid down there – to prospective signings, to current players weighing up their options, and perhaps even to Gakpo himself.

Liverpool’s stance in the market is now brutally simple: add quality or risk standing still. Van Dijk spelled it out.
“Adding quality to the squad always makes a difference. We'll see what the next few days bring. After Tuesday, we have to fight for everything without any regrets.”
