Tyrell Malacia Joins FC Cincinnati from Manchester United
FC Cincinnati have landed one of the standout defensive signings of this MLS window, snapping up former Manchester United full-back Tyrell Malacia on a free transfer.
The 27-year-old Netherlands international has chosen a new chapter across the Atlantic, signing a deal that runs through June 2027. The contract includes a club option for the 2027-28 MLS season, underlining how firmly Cincinnati see him as part of their long-term spine.
The Ohio club confirmed the move on Friday, a statement of intent from a side determined to stay among the Eastern Conference’s elite. A back line that already carried ambition now adds a defender who has seen some of the game’s toughest stages.
Cincinnati clear the runway
To get Malacia through the door, Cincinnati’s front office had to work the MLS rulebook.
The club secured an international roster slot from St. Louis CITY SC, sending $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM) the other way. It’s a sizeable outlay for a roster slot two years down the line, and a clear sign of how highly they value the Dutchman’s arrival.
General Manager Chris Albright summed up the mood around the club, describing the recruitment of Malacia as the addition of a player with real experience and weight in the dressing room. Cincinnati are not treating this as a luxury signing; they are building around him.
From injury frustration to a fresh canvas
Malacia’s switch to MLS closes a stop-start spell at Manchester United that never quite matched its early promise.
He arrived at Old Trafford from Feyenoord in 2022 and initially impressed under Erik ten Hag, bringing aggression, energy and bite to United’s left flank. Then the injuries hit. Fitness issues repeatedly stalled his momentum and restricted his availability, turning what could have been a breakout Premier League run into a fragmented stay.
Even so, he still managed 50 appearances for the 20-time English champions, featuring in both the Premier League and European competitions. Those minutes came against some of the sharpest attackers in world football, lessons that now travel with him to TQL Stadium.
For Cincinnati, that experience is gold. Malacia has already amassed more than 250 professional appearances in Europe, from Eredivisie battles to Champions League nights. The “Orange and Blue” are banking on that know-how to sharpen their edge in tight MLS contests.
The club has wasted no time building anticipation. Teasers of Malacia in Cincinnati colours have already rolled out across social media, offering supporters an early glimpse of the defender they hope will lock down their flank for years.
A defender with medals, not just miles
This is not simply a player in need of a reset. Malacia arrives with silverware and pedigree.
At Manchester United, he was part of the squad that lifted the 2022-23 EFL Cup, a trophy that ended a long wait for major honours at Old Trafford. His recent loan spell back in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven brought even more success, as he contributed to a title-winning 2024-25 Eredivisie campaign.
On the international stage, Malacia has already broken through the glass ceiling of potential. He owns nine senior caps for the Netherlands and was selected in the Dutch squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the team pushed their way to the quarter-finals before bowing out in dramatic fashion.
Now the stage changes: from Manchester and Eindhoven to Cincinnati and MLS. The question is no longer whether Malacia has the résumé. It’s how far his experience can push a franchise that believes it is on the brink of something bigger.
