Here’s where the market stands after another frantic round of calls, counteroffers and cold feet.
Arsenal and Man Utd lock horns over Quansah
Two of the Premier League’s biggest rebuilds have converged on the same name.
Arsenal and Manchester United are both in active talks with Bayer Leverkusen over England international center back Jarell Quansah. The 21-year-old has become one of the most coveted defensive prospects in Europe, and Leverkusen now find two of the richest clubs in the world at their door at the same time.
Neither side can afford to miss on this one. Arsenal want depth and succession planning at the back. United need a new defensive core. Quansah sits right in the middle of that tug-of-war.
Arsenal’s defensive reset: Konsa almost over the line
While the Quansah battle plays out, Arsenal are close to landing another England defender.
A move for Aston Villa center back Ezri Konsa is described as “99% done” after the player requested to leave. Negotiations between the clubs are nearing completion, with the Gunners pushing to wrap up a deal quickly.
If Arsenal get Konsa over the line and stay in the race for Quansah, Mikel Arteta’s back line could look very different by September.
Osimhen at the center of a London–Manchester shootout
At the other end of the pitch, one striker dominates the Premier League rumor mill: Victor Osimhen.
Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have all held talks over the possibility of signing the Galatasaray forward. Arteta has gone a step further. Osimhen is his top priority for the remainder of the window, a statement of intent that underlines Arsenal’s need for a ruthless No. 9.
Tottenham and United are not backing away, though. Spurs want a marquee striker to anchor Ange Postecoglou’s attack. United are desperate for goals and a focal point. Osimhen ticks every box, which is why this saga is unlikely to quiet down anytime soon.
Liverpool move first for Wharton
While rivals fight over forwards, Liverpool are targeting the heart of midfield.
They are expected to close the signing of Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, stealing a march on Real Madrid. The 20-year-old has quickly built a reputation as one of the most intelligent young midfielders in the league, and Liverpool’s move signals a clear commitment to youth and control in the center of the pitch.
If they get Wharton in the door, it’s a significant win over Madrid in a market where the Spanish giants rarely lose.
Tottenham’s winger hunt: Savinho, Gakpo and Neto
Tottenham’s transfer strategy is crystal clear: power up the flanks.
They want two wingers and have already tested Manchester City’s resolve for Savinho. City have turned down an offer of $115 million (£85 million) from Spurs, convinced the London club will return with an improved bid in the coming weeks.
That’s only half the story. Spurs are also interested in Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo and Chelsea’s Pedro Neto. An agreement over personal terms has already been reached between Tottenham and Gakpo, a significant step that piles pressure on Liverpool to decide whether to cash in or hold firm.
If Spurs land even two of Savinho, Gakpo and Neto, Postecoglou’s wide options will look unrecognizable.
Liverpool’s Barcola plan: pause now, pounce later
Liverpool’s winger search has taken a different route through Paris.
Talks with PSG over Bradley Barcola have stalled, with Liverpool pausing their pursuit after failing to make progress on a fee. The strategy now is clear: wait. The plan is to return in the final 10 days of the window, when the pressure rises and PSG may be more willing to negotiate.
PSG’s current asking price stands at around $196 million (£145 million), with suggestions it could drop to $169 million (£125 million). Even at the lower figure, it would be a huge outlay.
Liverpool have also ended their pursuit of another PSG winger, Ibrahim Mbaye, to focus solely on Barcola. The belief inside Anfield is simple: signing both would be too expensive, so it’s all or nothing for their preferred target.
Man Utd scan Europe’s defenses
United’s recruitment drive is not limited to England.
Alongside their interest in Quansah, they are also looking at Bayern Munich center back Kim Min-jae. The South Korea international has already proved he can anchor a back line at the highest level, and United see him as a potential solution to their long-standing defensive instability.
At left back, United have held formal talks with Newcastle United over a move for Lewis Hall. Injuries and inconsistency in that position have forced the club to act, and Hall’s age and profile fit the direction of their rebuild.
Newcastle pivot to Palhinha
Newcastle, meanwhile, have sensed opportunity in Bavaria.
They have made an aggressive push to sign Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha after the Bundesliga champions publicly confirmed the collapse of negotiations with Aston Villa. Once Villa were out, Newcastle moved in.
Palhinha’s ball-winning and physical presence would give Eddie Howe’s midfield a different edge, especially in European competition. Now it comes down to whether Bayern are prepared to sell after such a public breakdown with Villa.
La Liga: Barcelona dream big, count the pennies
Across in Spain, Barcelona are still trying to square ambition with reality.
Hansi Flick has asked the club to make one final push to sign Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez, who is due to hold talks with his current employers next week. Flick sees Álvarez as a versatile forward who can transform Barca’s attack.
Yet the club’s hierarchy has set a different priority. Their full focus is currently on completing a deal for Manchester City midfielder Rodri. Only once that saga is resolved will they revisit a move for Álvarez.
It is a bold wish list: Rodri to control games, Álvarez to finish them. Barcelona’s finances will decide how much of that dream survives contact with reality.
Juventus look to Madrid for their next No. 1
In Turin, Juventus are working through their own rebuild and have turned their attention to Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin.
The Ukrainian goalkeeper has been identified as a potential target as Juve expand their search for a new stopper. Lunin’s performances when called upon at Madrid have not gone unnoticed, and a move to Italy could finally give him an undisputed starting role.
Real Madrid’s Ortega talks collapse
Not every Madrid negotiation is moving forward.
Talks between Real Madrid and Strasbourg over the sale of 20-year-old striker Jacobo Ortega have collapsed. That breakdown has opened the door for Elche, who now have a clear path to negotiate a deal for the young forward.
For Ortega, it could be the difference between another year in limbo and a platform to play regular senior football.
Kane watched, but likely staying put
Even with all this movement, one of the game’s most reliable goalscorers looks set to stay where he is.
Barcelona and Tottenham are both continuing to monitor Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, keeping a close eye on his situation in Germany. The expectation, though, is that Kane will sign a new contract to commit himself to the Bundesliga champions until 2029.
