Tottenham's Transfer Window: De Zerbi Pushes for Gakpo Signing

Roberto De Zerbi has made it clear: Tottenham’s transfer window is not finished yet.

With days left before Tuesday’s 11pm deadline, the Spurs head coach wants one more signing and is pushing for the club to act, as interest in Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo gathers pace.

“I didn't expect a transfer window like we have done,” De Zerbi told reporters on Friday, reflecting on a busy summer. “I think we can do one player more in one specific position.”

That “one more” could well be Gakpo. Spurs are understood to be keen on the Dutch international and are expected to ramp up their efforts to prise him away from Anfield in the final stretch of the window.

This is not a manager fighting his corner alone. De Zerbi described a united front at the top of the club, revealing a dinner summit on Thursday night with the owners, sporting director Johan Lange and chief executive Vinai Venkatesham.

“Yesterday we went to dinner with the owners, Johan and Vinai and we spoke about this,” he said. “All of us are on the same page and a very good connection.”

Tottenham look set for a hectic few days. The club still have players eager to move on, and De Zerbi has already laid down his stance inside the dressing room.

“I've been very clear with all the players: if you speak clearly you can't expect surprises,” he explained. “The players who wanted to leave have left. We maybe have some players who want to leave and they are waiting, we are waiting for an offer.

“You have to feel proud to stay here. It's an emotional project we are building with new players.”

That “project” may yet continue without Pape Matar Sarr. The midfielder has drawn interest throughout the window and has not featured in either of Spurs’ first two league games this season, leaving his future in the spotlight as the clock ticks down.

De Zerbi stressed there is no fitness issue holding him back.

“Pape is good [fitness-wise],” he said. “We have to see in the last days of the transfer market what can happen with him.”

One more signing. A possible high-profile arrival in Gakpo. Several unresolved exits. Tottenham’s window is not drifting to a close; it’s heading for a sharp, decisive finish.
