Tottenham's Ambitious Summer Transfer Plans

Tottenham are already tearing up the script of a normal summer window. And they might not be done yet.

An £85m agreement with Manchester City for Savinho has set the tone, Omar Marmoush is edging closer, and the spending is hurtling towards the £400m mark. For most clubs, that would be the headline. At Spurs, it might just be the prelude.

Double deal – and then what?

Fabrizio Romano laid out the blueprint on Thursday: Tottenham want two wingers and a central striker. Savinho and Cody Gakpo were identified as the wide options, with a new No 9 to follow.

Phase one moved quickly. Spurs struck that huge deal with City for Savinho and immediately swung their focus to Marmoush, who is being lined up as the central striker in that plan.

The Egypt international has already agreed personal terms on a five-year contract and is described as very keen to play under Roberto De Zerbi. Negotiations between Spurs and his club are said to be “very close”, with a deal expected to be wrapped up in the coming days.

That alone would represent a bold attacking reset. Yet the noise around Tottenham suggests there could be another twist.

“May yet go bigger”

According to The Independent’s chief football writer Miguel Delaney, Tottenham “may yet go bigger than Savinho and Omar Marmoush”. His line, dropped into his Inside Football newsletter, hints at a club still thinking beyond the deals everyone can see.

The obvious name is Cody Gakpo. Romano has repeatedly framed the plan as Savinho, Gakpo and a central striker. With Marmoush now filling that striker role, Gakpo remains the outstanding wide option on the list.

Spurs have been linked with the Dutchman throughout the summer, even as the Marmoush pursuit has dominated the last few days. Romano has been clear that Gakpo’s situation is still alive.

“It’s not over at all, the summer transfer window for Tottenham. I always told you Savinho, Gakpo, and a central striker. Savinho is done. Gakpo: we will talk in the next few days,” he said.

If it isn’t Gakpo, Delaney’s suggestion points to something else entirely – another attacking target being worked on well away from the spotlight.

With the window now in its final week, that secrecy can’t last much longer.

Gakpo deal still faces hurdles

For Gakpo specifically, several pieces still have to fall into place.

Personal terms are not the problem. He has already reached an agreement with Tottenham and is believed to be very keen on the move. The obstacle sits firmly at Liverpool’s end.

Liverpool see Gakpo as part of their plans. His performances in pre-season have only strengthened that stance, and there is internal confidence that new manager Andoni Iraola can extract even more from him.

Tottenham, for their part, have not yet put an offer on the table. That could change quickly if Liverpool reshape their own forward line.

The Merseyside club are working on deals for Paris Saint-Germain pair Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye. Should either of those transfers go through, competition in Gakpo’s area of the pitch would spike, and Liverpool might soften their resistance to a sale.

Until then, Spurs wait. They have Savinho in the bag, Marmoush almost over the line, and a war chest that shows no sign of closing.

The question now is not whether Tottenham are ambitious. It’s how far they are prepared to push this window in its final days.
