Tottenham's Ambitious Spending Spree: De Zerbi's Excitement for New Signings

Tottenham’s spending spree shows no sign of slowing, and Roberto De Zerbi is loving every minute of it.

This week Spurs pulled off a headline-grabbing double deal for Sávio and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City, a move that pushes the club’s summer outlay beyond £350 million and sends another jolt through a Premier League already wary of their ambition.

Sávio has arrived in an £85m package, a statement fee for a wide forward expected to light up the league. Marmoush comes on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy that could reach £60m, a structure that gives Tottenham immediate firepower and future security in one swoop.

De Zerbi could barely hide his excitement as he looked ahead to Saturday’s clash with Newcastle.

“I think Sávio and Marmoush are bomba,” he said, smiling at his own choice of word. “I don't know what name or how you can call them but players of a high level, for sure.”

The Italian has been backed heavily since walking through the door, yet even he sounded slightly taken aback by the scale of this window.

“I didn't expect one transfer market and one window like we have done,” he admitted.

And still, he is not done.

De Zerbi revealed that Spurs are pushing to add at least one more signing before Tuesday night’s deadline. Talks with the hierarchy have been constant, and on Thursday they moved from the boardroom to the dinner table.

“I think we can do one player more and in one specific position,” he said. “Yesterday we went for dinner with the owners, with Vinai [Venkatesham], with Johan [Lange] and with Enrico [Venturelli]. We spoke about this, but we have all of us on the same page and there is a very good connection.”

That alignment at the top has translated into a rebuilt attack.

Marmoush arrives off the back of a prolific run: 37 goals at Eintracht Frankfurt and 16 at Manchester City. Those numbers matter. So does the timing. James Maddison is not fully fit, Mohammed Kudus is only just returning from injury, and Tottenham needed another reliable presence in the final third.

De Zerbi believes the Egypt international offers exactly that.

“A great signing for us. A great player, another great player and every one of us loves him as a player,” he said. “We hope he can do what he is able. I think he can give more solutions in attack. We need players in attack capable to score goals, to play well with the ball also, a very fast player, great qualities and we are all happy.”

Sávio’s fee and Marmoush’s goal record underline the scale of Tottenham’s gamble on attacking talent. De Zerbi, though, does not talk like a man worried about risk. He talks like a coach who sees a frontline being built in his image — aggressive, technical, relentless.

Newcastle will be the first to feel the impact. The rest of the league will be watching to see whether this “bomba” front line can turn Tottenham’s lavish spending into something more tangible than headlines.
